SB: Lackawanna Silences Sussex In Region Sweep

Mekenzie Revere Was Excellent Again In Game One, While The Offense Was Relentless The Whole Day

3/28/26

NEWTON, NJ – Mekenzie Revere was stellar in game one, and the Lackawanna softball offense was overwhelming in game two, helping the Falcons sweep past Sussex County CC, 8-0 and 20-4, in a Region XIX DII doubleheader on a chilly Saturday afternoon in New Jersey.

The Falcons (19-6, 6-0) were unchallenged through most of Saturday, and that's thanks in part to Revere's excellent outing in the circle. The first-year pitcher from Ansonia, CT gave up just three hits in five innings, striking out ten batters, while the Lackawanna offense put up the eight runs necessary to trigger the run-rule in the fifth.

After the Skylanders (3-11, 2-6) had retired the Falcons in order at the start of the game, Sussex then put two runners on with two outs, getting them into scoring position on a wild pitch. Revere bounced back, getting a swing-through on a 3-2 pitch to freeze the runners and keep the game scoreless. Her teammates rewarded her in the top of the second.

Mackenzie Adolfson (Throop, PA) reached third base with two outs, thanks to a passed ball and a wild pitch, and then scored on a single that trickled in front of the plate for Haleigh Mazol (Stroudsburg, PA). The catcher hesitated for a moment, allowing Mazol to scamper down the line at first. When the catcher threw to first, that let Adolfson scoot home for the first run of the game. Lackawanna added two more runs on a two-run hit from Ayahna Fleisher (Duncannon, PA) that made it 3-0, heading into the bottom half.

Lackawanna struck for three more in the third, using an error, a bases-loaded walk, and then another error, this time in the outfield, to drive the lead up to 6-0 after 2.5 innings.

Revere pitched around a one-out single, picking up two strikeouts, but Lackawanna wasted three base runners in the fourth. Revere struck out two more batters and danced around a leadoff double, and Lackawanna added a pair in the fifth, cashing in a leadoff triple from Mazol with an RBI single from Fleisher, followed by an RBI single to center from Riley Knott (Clarks Summit, PA). Revere and the defense retired the side in order in the bottom half to trigger the run-rule victory.

Fleisher was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs in game one, while Knott had two hits and an RBI. Mazol had two hits, two runs, and two RBIs, while Adolfson scored a pair of runs. The Falcons drew six walks and did not strike out in game one.

In game two, a 13-run third inning blew the game wide open, as the Falcons scored 13 on ten hits and two errors from the Skylanders.

Leading 4-1 after an eventful first inning, the Falcons entered the third looking for some insurance. Back-to-back singles, followed by a passed ball, put the Falcons in scoring position. An error let one run score, making it 5-1. Later, with the bases loaded and one out, a wild pitch scored another run. Fleisher stepped in and swung at the first pitch she saw, rocketing a liner to center field that skipped past the outfielder. Two runs came home, and Fleisher motored around third and sprinted home for an inside- the-park home run that made it 9-0. Another error on the infield led to an RBI single from Knott, making it 10-1. The Falcons added seven more runs after that, getting a one-run double from Adolfson, a wild pitch, a passed ball, and RBI singles from Fleisher, Abigail Yenalevitch (Kingston, PA), Kyleah Edwards (Taylor, PA), and Arianna Gaylord (Wyoming, PA) that pushed the Lackawanna advantage to 17-1 after 2.5 innings.

A passed ball with two outs gave the Skylanders a second run, but a two-run error let two more runs score for the Falcons in the fourth, followed by a sacrifice fly from Mazol. After the top of the fourth, Lackawanna led 20-2.

Sussex scored two runs on a passed ball and an RBI ground out in the bottom of the fifth, but the Falcons managed to see off the Skylanders for the series sweep and their sixth-straight victory.

Mekenzie Dineen (Wilmington, DE) got the win, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits in three innings, striking out four batters. Fleisher was 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs in game two, while Edwards finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Gracie Sokol (Belle Vernon, PA) was 3-for-3 with three runs, while Adolfson finished 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Tori May (New Castle, PA) was 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs, and two RBIs.

The wins push the Falcons into first place in the Region XIX DII standings, a game ahead of defending champion Mercer County CC. Lackawanna will look to keep its winning-streak going on Sunday, March 29th, when the Falcons travel to take on NJCAA DIII #6 SUNY Corning CC. First pitch of the non-conference doubleheader is set for 12:00pm ET in Corning, NY.
