CORNING, NY – A
Mackenzie Adolfson homer in the middle of game two helped give the Lackawanna College softball offense enough of a lift, as the Falcons managed a twin bill split with SUNY Corning CC on Sunday afternoon in New York. Lackawanna fell 5-4 on a walk off in game one, but scored six runs over the final three innings to win 7-4 in game two.
Â
Adolfson (Throop, PA) stepped to the plate in the fifth inning, after Lackawanna had scored four runs in the fourth to take the lead, only to see the Red Barons (8-3) score a pair to get within 5-4 after 4.5 innings. The Falcons, batting as the home side in game two, needed a boost, and Adolfson swung at the first pitch she saw, hitting a towering shot to dead center field that cleared the wall and gave Lackawanna a 6-4 advantage.
Â
An RBI single from
Laniah Tasker (Chambersburg, PA) in the sixth made it 7-4, Falcons, and starter
Abigail Yenalevitch (Kingston, PA) made that lead stand up, pitching around a two-out walk in the seventh to secure the doubleheader split.
Â
Lackawanna had jumped ahead of the Barons in the fourth thanks to some serious defensive errors. Two straight singles with one out put a pair of runners on, but a strikeout threatened to derail the Falcons' chances to get anything out of the inning. Yenalevitch went the other way on a pitch for an RBI single that scored the tying run to make it 2-2, helping herself out.
Ayahna Fleisher (Duncannon, PA) singled to short and beat out the throw, bringing the go-ahead run home to make it 3-2. An error at short allowed
Kyleah Edwards (Taylor, PA) to reach and brought Yenalevitch home, while another error at short let
Riley Knott (Clarks Summit, PA) get aboard and brought Fleisher home, making it 5-2, Falcons.
Â
A walk, followed by a pair of RBI singles and an error, let the Barons get two runs home in the top of the fifth, but Yenalevitch settled in to get a fly out to short and a ground out to herself to strand the tying run at second, then shut Corning down the rest of the way for her third win of the season.
Â
Yenalevitch went seven innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits, striking out three and walking three. Adolfson had two hits and two runs, while Fleisher was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Â
Corning, the #6 team in the NJCAA Division III polls last week, was a tough nut to crack in game one, leading 4-2 heading into the seventh inning. Edwards had the big hit that inning, hitting a 1-0 pitch to left field and clearing the fence for a game-tying two-run homer. However, the comeback was not to be, as a hit batter, followed by three straight two-out walks allowed the winning run to literally walk the game off for the Red Barons.
Â
Fleisher had led the game off with a single, but the Barons retired the Falcons in order, then struck for two in the bottom half, taking advantage of an error in the outfield that let a runner get to third, followed by two singles and a sacrifice fly.
Â
Lackawanna stranded a pair in the second, but starter
Mekenzie Revere (Ansonia, CT), who finished with ten strikeouts, got a pair of punchouts in the bottom half to give the Falcons a lift into the third, where they'd score following a lead off single from Fleisher and a two-out error on the outfield to make it just a 2-1 deficit.
Â
Revere stranded a pair in the bottom of the third, but was in trouble in the fourth, with three-straight walks loading the bases with one out. Revere reached back and got two massive strikeouts to strand the runners and keep Corning from scoring. Once again, the Falcons cashed in the next half inning, this time using a one-out error on the outfield to get a runner to second, and then scoring the tying run on a two-out single from Tasker. A sacrifice fly from Corning in the bottom half gave the Barons the lead back, and they had the bases loaded again because of a pair of two-out walks, but Revere got another strikeout to strand the bases loaded again.
Â
Lackawanna was retired in order in the sixth, and Corning got a solo homer in the bottom half, hitting an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall, to go ahead 4-2, setting up the final inning's drama.
Â
Revere was hit with the loss, her fourth, walking eleven and striking out ten in 6.2 innings. She allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits, while hitting two batters. Fleisher had two hits and a run scored, while Edwards had two RBIs and two runs.
Haleigh Mazol (Stroudsburg, PA) was 2-for-3. In two games, Lackawanna didn't draw any walks.
Â
Lackawanna will get back to Region XIX DII play on Tuesday, March 31
st, as the Falcons are scheduled to host Salem CC. First pitch is set for 3:00pm ET at Scranton HS softball field. The match-up is the second time this season that the Mighty Oaks and the Falcons will play, with Lackawanna sweeping a doubleheader on the road at Salem earlier this month.
