BEL AIR, Md. – It was a day to forget for the Lackawanna College baseball offense, as the Falcons combined for 22 strikeouts and just two hits in a pair of losses at NJCAA Division I Harford CC, losing 6-2 in game one and 12-0 in five innings of game two.
Â
The Falcons (5-10) had their chances in game one, drawing eight walks and leading 2-0 heading into the fifth inning, but Lackawanna wasted a leadoff double in the top of the fifth from
Jake Virbitsky (Media, PA), stranding him at third base, and then gave up the lead in the bottom frame, as the Fighting Owls (18-3) struck for five runs, taking advantage of back-to-back RBI hits that tied the game, and then a two-run single and a sac fly to take the lead.
Â
The Owls scored another run in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to another sac fly, leaving Lackawanna with a four-run hole in the seventh. Virbitsky drew a two-out walk, but a ground out ended the game.
Â
Lackawanna had just two hits, stranding five runners in game one. Virbitsky had a double and two walks, while
Sean Moore (Philadelphia, PA) had the lone pair of RBIs, scoring a pair on a two-run single in the top of the fourth inning.
Nico Nattle (Phoenixville, PA) pitched four strong innings in the start, striking out six and giving up just two hits, but the bullpen gave up all six runs in the final two innings.
Â
In game two, it was perfection from the Owls, as Harford battered the Falcons at the plate for eight runs in the first, then cruised to a perfect-game, run-rule shortened victory at 12-0 in five innings. The Falcons were held without a hit and never reached base through five innings against the Owls.
Â
Starter
Josiah Williams (Emmaus, PA) was roughed up, giving up nine runs, five earned, on seven hits in just two innings. Harford scored eight runs on five hits and one error in the first inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded single to score the game's first run and two RBI-doubles that scored three runs combined and capped off an inning where the Falcons had two wild pitches, a passed ball, a hit batter, and an error on the infield.
Â
Williams settled down after a pair of batters reached in the second, getting a strikeout, a sac fly, and another strikeout to limit damage, but the Falcons were dismissed in order via strikeouts in the top of the third.
Makai Day (South Williamsport, PA) came on in relief I the bottom half and stranded a pair of runners to give the Falcons a bit of a boost heading into the top of the fourth, but Lackawanna again was retired in order via strikeout. Harford then struck for three more in the bottom of the fourth, using a two-out single to score one run, and then a two-run homer with two outs to make it 12-0 after four innings.
Â
Needing to score three runs just to keep the game going, or at least hoping for just a baserunner, the Falcons couldn't deliver, getting a ground out, a strikeout, and then a ground out to short to end the day early.
Â
The Falcons struck out eleven times at the plate, putting just four balls in play. Williams took the loss, his second on the year. Day pitched two innings of relief, giving up three runs on two hits and three walks, while striking out a pair.
Â
Lackawanna will look to shake off the sweep with a three-game set this week on the road, as the Falcons travel to take on Denmark Technical College in Denmark, South Carolina. The teams will first play a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17
th, starting at 12:00pm ET. They'll follow that with a single nine-inning contest on Wednesday, March 18
th, starting at 12:00pm ET.
