WSOC: Shippensburg Overwhelms Lackawanna College

The Falcons Faced 51 Shots And Had To Make 18 Saves In A Loss To The Raiders

10/3/26

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophia Arvelo (Allentown, PA) faced an incredible amount of pressure on Saturday afternoon, making 17 saves for Lackawanna College women's soccer, but the Shippensburg University Raiders scored four second-half goals to run away with the 5-0 win against the Falcons on Saturday afternoon at David See Field.

The Falcons (1-9-0) were under constant pressure from the opening kick, as Shippensburg (3-6-2) posted 51 shots, 24 on target, and had ten corners on the afternoon. Shippensburg posted 13 shots in the first 15 minutes, constantly winning the ball back and attacking the Falcons, and the Raiders eventually scored on a great individual effort in the 18th minute when Ashley Hughes, who ended the day with four goals, darted from midfield down the left channel, cutting to her left at the box and sending one past Arvelo to make it 1-0, Shippensburg.

The Falcons got nothing in the first half, as Shippensburg forced eleven saves and had 26 shots in the half, but Lackawanna held firm and got it to 1-0 at halftime.

Shippensburg kept the pressure up, and Hughes found a second goal in the 59th minute, when a turnover led to the Raiders moving down the middle, then passing left to Hughes, who cut into the box and beat Arvelo near-post to make it 2-0, Raiders. One minute later, Paige Marek added a goal with a long-range shot from the top of the box, going to the right side of the net to make it 3-0.

Hughes added her third goal on a turnover in the 82nd minute, cutting in from the left and bouncing it off the bottom of the crossbar. She added her fourth in the 85th minute, after a Shippensburg corner resulted in a cross into the box that she punched in to make it 5-0, Raiders.

MacKenzie Seifried (Winfield, NJ) had a shot for the Falcons late, taking an attempt from distance that went wide right. Lindsey Tasker (South Abington Twp., PA) saw her first action since tearing her ACL almost 12 months ago against Essex County College. Tasker played defense for 86 minutes before subbing in at keeper for the final four minutes of game time.

The Falcons will get back to action on Wednesday, October 7th, with a road contest at Bloomsburg University. The Huskies are set to host at Steph Pettit Stadium at 7:00pm ET. Lackawanna College will be home next on Saturday, October 10th, when the Falcons are set to host Millersville University for a 1:00pm ET kick at Schautz Stadium in Dunmore.
