FB: Big-Play Bloomsburg Downs Lackawanna College On Homecoming

The Visiting Huskies Used Big Plays And Efficient Drives To Quickly Build A Big Lead Against The Falcons

10/3/26

SCRANTON, Pa. – It was one-way traffic for most of Saturday afternoon, as Bloomsburg University posted 403 yards of offense on its way to a 42-10 victory over Lackawanna College football on Saturday afternoon at PenFed Field at Scranton Memorial Stadium.

The Falcons (0-5) couldn't contain the offense for Bloomsburg, as the Huskies (4-1) ran for 196 yards, averaging 6.1 yards per rush, and relied on big plays to put the Falcons down. The four scoring drives in the first half for the Bloomsburg went 45 seconds, ten seconds, 3:19, and 18 seconds, and the Huskies scored on plays of 30-or-more yards four separate times throughout the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Lackawanna attack was hemmed in on the ground, getting just 70 yards against the top defense in the PSAC, as the Huskies got two interceptions, eleven tackles-for-loss, and three sacks on the day. The Falcons finished with 235 yards of offense and won the first-down battle (20-17) and TOP (38:18 to 21:42), but the Huskies limited the Falcons to 3-for-18 on third downs.

David Naniewicz (Scott Twp., PA) was 24-for-40 for 165 yards, throwing two interceptions and taking three sacks. Naniewicz gained 21 yards on the ground, but had ten rushes for a net of -6 yards. Rhys Williams (Throop, PA) ran for 33 yards to lead the team, both of his carries coming on fake punt attempts from the Falcons, while Jalen Fletcher (Bethlehem, PA) ground out 32 yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts.

Jayden Byrd (Norristown, PA) hauled in four passes for 70 yards, while Fletcher had three catches for 26 yards. Keaon Jenkins (Wayne, NJ) had three grabs for 22 yards.

Defensively, Brodie Daugherty (Manheim, PA) had five tackles, while Billy Maloney (Scranton, PA) had four solo stops and five total tackles. Keyonte Davis (Washington, D.C.) had four tackles and two pass break-ups.

Bloomsburg opened the game with a touchdown on its fourth play of the drive, a deep pass down the middle for a 48-yard touchdown, and the Huskies got the ball back on the next series when a Naniewicz pass was picked off by the Huskies in Lackawanna territory, setting up BU with the ball at the LC 10-yard line. Three plays later, the Huskies were in the end zone again, leading 14-0 with barely two minutes gone by.

Lackawanna's next drive stalled out near midfield, but the defense rose to the occasion and held firm, forcing a Bloomsburg punt and letting the Falcons take over near midfield with 7:37 to go in the quarter. Lackawanna drove to the Bloomsburg 21, helped by a 32-yard pass to Byrd from Naniewicz, and were faced with a 4th-and-11 from the BU 22-yard line. Lackawanna settled for a field goal, but BU's Ian Donohue burst through the line to block the field goal and snuff out the Falcons' early opportunity to get on the board.

Bloomsburg immediately made the Falcons pay, marching down the field in just three minutes and scoring on a one-yard plunge from Declan Clancy to go ahead 21-0 with 1:21 remaining in the first.

In the second, a roughing the punter penalty extended a Lackawanna drive, the Falcons converted a fourth down on a Naniewicz pass to Byrd, and the Falcons made it to Bloomsburg's 23-yard line, but a receiver fell running to the end zone and a Naniewicz pass was picked off for a touchback before the Falcons could convert.

Bloomsburg went for the kill on the next drive, hitting an 80-yard pass to Xavier Diaz down the left sideline to go ahead 28-0 with 10:57 to play in the first half.

The Falcons marched on their next series, converting on a fake punt at their own 29-yard line, then converting another fourth down when Bloomsburg roughed the punter for a second time. The Falcons got to the Bloomsburg 24, but a false start on third down pushed them back, a run up the middle was hit for a two-yard loss, and Naniewicz couldn't connect with his receiver down the right sideline for an incomplete pass that ended the drive.

The defense forced a Bloomsburg punt, and Lackawanna marched again, this time taking advantage of a personal foul penalty on the Huskies to get to the Bloomsburg 27-yard line. The Falcons converted a third-and-short to get to the 13-yard line, but the Huskies held firm, and the Falcons settled for a 33-yard field goal from Isiah Rodriguez (Old Forge, PA) with 29 seconds to go in the half, making it 28-3, Huskies, at the break.

Lackawanna punted to start the second half, and Bloom marched from its own 30 to push a touchdown through on a Clancy 36-yard run that made it 35-3 with under ten to play in the third period. The Falcons drove the field on their next series, helped by another fake punt run by Williams, as well as a 13-yard pass play to Breylon Miller (Winchester, VA) and a ten-yard run from Naniewicz. Facing a first-and-goal from the Bloomsburg ten, the Huskies responded, stuffing the Falcons and sacking Naniewicz on fourth-and-goal from the eight, denying Lackawanna.

Lackawanna got itself on the board on a drive in the fourth, highlighted by a 26-yard pass to Byrd, and capped off with a three-yard touchdown run from Fletcher that got the Falcons within 35-10 with under 12 minutes to play. Bloomsburg responded with a touchdown drive to make it 42-10 with 8:25 to go, and Bloomsburg ran the clock out on its final possession to end the contest.

Lackawanna College gets back to action with a monster road game on Saturday, October 10th, as the Falcons go to take on the #3/4 Kutztown University Golden Bears. Kickoff is set for 12:00pm ET at Andre Reed Stadium on Kutztown's campus.
