WEST CALDWELL, NJ – Essex County College showed why it's receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II polls, as the Wolverines blanked Lackawanna College men's soccer, 8-0, in their Region XIX Division II clash on Saturday afternoon at the Essex County College West Campus soccer field.
The Falcons (2-4-0, 0-2-0) were under duress right from the start, as Essex forced a save inside of the first minute from keeper
Rupert Deniz (Dickinson, ND), as he deflected the ball wide of the left side of the net. The Wolverines squandered two subsequent corner kicks, and Lackawanna pressed forward a bit, missing high on a
Manuel Bur (Spring, TX) shot. A few minutes later, Essex (5-1-0, 1-1-0) found the first goal on a ball deflected down off a corner, beating the keeper to his left for the 1-0 lead inside of the first five minutes.
Lackawanna had its clear-cut best opportunity to equalize a few minutes later when
Diego Semedo (Dunmore, PA) broke through on the left side and sprinted towards the net. Semedo tried to touch the ball on, but the keeper kicked out a leg and kept the ball out.
As the first half went on, the pressure mounted against the Lackawanna defense, and Essex found a second goal on a header around the half hour mark. Essex added another about ten minutes later to take a 3-0 lead. The Falcons scored what looked to be a goal in the 45
th minute after Bur pumped a ball into the box to
Micah Lawson (Allentown, PA), who beat the keeper, but the offside flag was raised and the goal was disallowed.
After halftime, Essex added an early goal after redirecting a rebound from a Deniz save. That goal was the harbinger of things to come in the second half, as the Wolverines found four more goals over the course of the next half hour, eventually ending things early via the eight-goal rule.
Lackawanna College goes back on the road in its next contest, as the Falcons travel to take on Sussex County CC on Saturday, October 4
th. First kick is set for 2:00pm ET at the Sussex County CC soccer field. The game will be the second of a doubleheader, with the women's teams playing first at 12:00pm ET.
