MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – A 20-point first half hole was too steep a hill to climb for the Falcons, as #11 Lackawanna College fell 49-34 to #8 Georgia Military College on Saturday afternoon in Division I football action at historic Davenport Field in Milledgeville, GA.
The Falcons (2-1) fell behind 27-7 in the first half, with the host squad Bulldogs (4-1) scoring touchdowns on their first four possessions. Twice in the second half, Lackawanna got the game to within one score, but GMC managed to answer each score to keep the Falcons at bay.
Trailing 34-14 with 32 seconds to go, Lackawanna took a few quick passes and got to 4
th-and-3 at its own 31 with about six seconds to go. Quarterback
Jacob Tiberi (Smyrna, DE) took the fourth-down snap out of the shotgun, shuffled up into the pocket and uncorked a long ball down the left sideline. Speedy receiver
Carmelo Taylor (Roanoke, VA) showed off some impressive hops to high-point the ball between three different GMC defenders, pirouetted away from a would-be tackler, and then sprinted down the sideline for the 69-yard touchdown strike to end the half and put Lackawanna down 34-21 at the break.
A pair of three-and-outs started the third, but the Falcons struck on their second possession, putting together a 10-play, 70-yard march that chewed up over five minutes and featured
Hassan Akanbi (Winchester, VA) heavily. Akanbi had 8 carries for 54 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown, on the drive alone, and the Falcons were within six at 34-28 with eight minutes to go in the third quarter.
GMC wasted no time, converting on a 67-yard swing pass on 3
rd-and-12 from its own 33 to answer back. After a two-point conversion, the score stood at 42-28 with 7:07 remaining in the third.
Later in the third, with GMC driving to the Lackawanna 14-yard line, the Falcons caught a break when the Bulldogs coughed it up on the one-yard line, gifting the Falcons the ball and halting a potential game-breaking scoring drive. Instead of GMC going up three scores, the Falcons methodically moved the ball down the field and finished off the eleven-play drive on a
Riley Guiffre (Brooklyn, NY) 16-yard scamper. The extra point was blocked, but the Falcons were once again within a score, this time at 42-34 with 12:12 to go.
The Bulldogs threw an interception at the Lackawanna 40-yard line on their next possession, but the Falcons gambled on a fourth-down from their own 47 and came up short. GMC capitalized almost immediately, hitting a 15-yard run, taking advantage of a pass interference, then throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to make it 49-34 with 6:27 to play.
Lackawanna put together a four-minute drive and got to the GMC 19-yard line, but a third-down pass was picked off when Tiberi was hit from behind on his throw, sealing Lackawanna's fate and sending the Falcons to their fifth-straight loss to Georgia Military.
Tiberi finished with 18 completions for 261 yards and two touchdowns. Taylor had six grabs for 172 yards and a score. Akanbi rushed for a team-high 94 yards and a touchdown. Lackawanna College had 459 yards of total offense, including 198 yards on the ground, and the Falcons had an interception and a fumble recovery.
Michael Johnson (Windsor, Ontario) led the way with eleven total tackles, including four solos and seven assisted stops. GMC ran for 202 yards and had 479 yards of total offense.
Lackawanna returns to Scranton for the week, then gets back on the road and travels to Utah next week for a date with nationally-ranked #7 Snow College in Ephraim, UT. Kickoff is set for 9:00pm ET at Terry Foote Stadium.
