BASE: Lackawanna Laser Show Helps Falcons Sweep Lazers At Home

Lackawanna College Hit Six Home Runs And Twelve Extra-Base Hits In Two Games To Secure The Falcons A Doubleheader Sweep

3/9/25

DUNMORE, Pa. – Six home runs and 20 runs across two games were more than enough to send Lackawanna College baseball to the doubleheader sweep against SUNY Onondaga CC, 9-1 and 11-1, on a brisk Sunday afternoon at Schautz Stadium.

The Falcons (5-8) had 12 combined extra base hits and 22 total hits in two games against the visiting Lazers (0-2), as the Lackawanna offense overwhelmed Onondaga to run its winning streak to three games.

Onondaga led initially in game one, putting runners on the corners with two down and getting a single deep in the hole at short stop to score the game's first run in the top of the second inning.

That lead would be short-lived.

John Hughes (Hamilton, NJ) singled to start the bottom frame, and Deacon Brown (Williamsport, PA) stepped into the box. Brown sat on a 2-2 pitch and blasted it into deep right-center field, putting it on the roof of the warehouse in the outfield and giving Lackawanna the 2-1 lead.

Starter Jaden Morgan (Perkasie, PA) kept the Lazers off the board in the top of the third, and the Falcons took advantage in the bottom frame to expand their lead out.

A leadoff triple from Brooks Henderson IV (Feasterville, PA) to left gave the Falcons a baserunner, and Nick Matson (Nanticoke, PA) singled him home to give Lackawanna the 3-1 lead. Later, a sac fly from Louis Kegerreis (Murrysville, PA) made it 4-1, Lackawanna, after three innings.

The Falcons made a pitching change before the fourth and brought on Zach Ruffing (Marlborough, MA). Ruffing struggled initially, issuing back-to-back one-out walks. A ground out put the runners in scoring position, and another walk loaded the bases with two down. Onondaga looked primed to get back into the contest, but a long fly out was all the Lazers got, stranding the bases loaded.

Jason Prudente (Bear Creek Twp., PA) went opposite field on a 1-2 pitch that kept carrying until it cleared the fence for his first career homer with the Falcons, expanding the Lackawanna lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Lackawanna looked to add more, but the Falcons wasted runners on second and third.

Ruffing danced around a single to strike out the side I the top of the fifth, and the Falcons added an RBI single in the bottom frame to make it 6-1.

Ruffing got three more strikeouts in the sixth, getting around an error at third that led off the inning, and Lackawanna rewarded him with a big bottom frame.

Henderson and Matson singled back-to-back to open the inning. Hughes stepped in later with one out and battled to a full count before lifting a fly ball to right field. Once again, the ball carried in the swirling wind to the point where it went over the fence, giving Hughes a three-run homer and gifting the Falcons the 9-1 advantage in the sixth.

Jay Creighton (Somers, NY) came on to finish off the game, and the Falcons took game one with ease.

Henderson was a perfect 4-for-4 in game one with two runs scored and his triple. Hughes was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, three RBI, and two walks. Brown was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Ruffing pitched three innings of relief, striking out seven for his first win of the season.

Starter Trey Sajeski (Holland, PA) was excellent in game two, giving up just one run on five hits in six innings of action, striking out seven batters for his first win of the year.

The Falcons did their best to make that stand up on offense with another impressive display.

In the bottom of the first, the Falcons hit the front thanks to a wild pitch that scored a run, followed by a double from Brown down the right field line. With just one out in the bottom half, the Falcons led 2-0. Onondaga battled back to get out of the inning with a fly out and a strikeout.

Sajeski danced around two singles in the second, and the Falcons exploded in the bottom frame. It started when Jordan Czerniak (Levittown, PA) hit an absolute moonshot to right-center field, his first homer of the year and the fourth already on the afternoon for the Falcons. A hit batter, followed by an error, set Kegerreis up for a two-run double over the left fielder's head, staking the Falcons to a 5-0 lead. A ground out put two away, and Brown stepped up and took another big cut, clearing the fence for his second home run of the day to make it 7-0, Lackawanna. The Falcons added an RBI single to make it 8-0 after two innings.

A sac fly in the third made it 9-0, which Lackawanna would hold heading into the fifth inning.

Onondaga got on the board in the top of the fifth, using back-to-back one-out hits to put runners on second and third. A sac fly to center was just deep enough to score a run, but Sajeski bounced back to get a swinging strikeout to get out of the top of the fifth.

Lackawanna answered back in the bottom half when Henderson launched a deep two-run homer with two down to push the Lackawanna lead to 11-1 after five.

Onondaga got a chance to answer in the top of the sixth, but the Lazers were held down by Sajeski, who got a strikeout and back-to-back ground outs to second to end the game.

Brown was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored, while Kenny Hirschfeld (New Hyde Park, NY) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Henderson was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Kegerreis went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Czerniak went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Falcons will be back to work on Wednesday, March 12th, when they travel to Vineland, NJ to take on the Dukes from RCSJ Cumberland for doubleheader action. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00pm ET.
