Lackawanna College Baseball Will Try To Add To Its Positive Run Of Results On Saturday

SCRANTON, Pa. – Winners of four-straight games, Lackawanna College baseball will take to the road and try to add a few more W's to the column, as the Falcons take on the Allegany College of Maryland Trojans for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 15th in Maryland.
 
First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12:00pm ET at Steve Bazarnic Field in Cumberland, MD. There is no video livestream available for the two games on Saturday.
 
About Lackawanna College
The Falcons (6-8) have won four-straight contests, knocking off the Dukes from Rowan College South Jersey – Cumberland on the road in their last contest, 11-9, this past Wednesday. Lackawanna took an early 7-0 lead in that game, and was up 11-5 after 4.5 innings, before the Dukes rallied to within two. Cumberland had the potential game-winning run at the plate in the ninth, but the Falcons held the home side scoreless in the bottom half to win the game. In 14 games, the Falcons are hitting a combined .313, compiling a collective .948 OPS, which includes a .420 OBP. Lackawanna has 59 extra-base hits, including 40 doubles and 15 home runs. Henderson has six multi-hit games, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs in the 13-6 win over Bryant & Stratton on February 9th. He was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a triple in the game one win against Onondaga this past Sunday. Henderson has a nine-game hitting streak coming into this weekend. He was 2-for-6 with a homer and a double, along with two runs scored and an RBI, in the 11-9 win against RCSJ Cumberland. Defensively, Henderson has 18 putouts, 23 assists, and four errors on the year from his shortstop position.
 
First-year outfielder Deacon Brown (Williamsport, PA) is second on the team with 18 total hits and has a .409 batting average this year. Brown has a 1.223 OPS and a .518 OBP. Brown has scored 12 runs, in a three-way tie for second on the team, and he has posted five doubles, two homers, and a team-best 14 RBIs. He's drawn six walks and been hit by five pitches, also first on the team. Brown has five multi-hit games on the year and has a nine-game hitting streak. He was a perfect 3-for-3 in the loss to Bryant & Stratton on Sunday, February 9th, hitting a double and driving in another run. Deacon hit a two-run homer in game one against Onondaga on Sunday, then hit another two-run homer in game two. Deacon has seven hits in his last five games, and five of them have been for extra bases. He was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the win against Cumberland. Deacon has been busy in the field, with 24 putouts, three assists, and one error this year.
 
Sophomore Louis Kegerreis (Murrysville, PA) is a .306 hitter this season through 12 appearances, collecting 15 total hits. Kegerreis has 12 runs scored this season, and he has a team-high seven doubles and 13 RBIs. Kegerreis has drawn three walks, but is tied for the team high in strikeouts with 12 this year. Kegerreis has four multi-hit games this season, including his last two games. Kegerreis was 3-for-5 against Cumberland on Wednesday, hitting a two-run homer in the first, a double, scoring two runs, and driving in three more. He's 5-for-9 in his last two games with four runs scored and five RBIs. He has eleven putouts and 17 assists this season in the field.
 
Sophomore first baseman John Hughes (Hamilton, NJ) is a .484 hitter with 15 hits in ten games this year. Hughes has a 1.449 OPS, with 12 runs scored and eleven RBIs. He has six doubles, a triple, and a three-run home run this season. Hughes has drawn eight walks and has been hit by two pitches, and he's got a .610 OBP this year. Hughes has four multi-hit games this season and has recorded at least one hit in his last five games. He was 3-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs in the win against Cumberland on Wednesday.
 
Sophomore outfielder Nick Matson (Nanticoke, PA) is a .304 hitter this season through 13 games, collecting 14 hits and driving in ten runs. Matson has scored seven runs and has put up five doubles on the year. He has drawn five walks and stole five bases, but is also tied with Kegerreis with 12 strikeouts this season. Matson has six multi-hit games this season, and he was 3-for-6 in the opener against Bryant & Stratton, driving in six runs and posting two doubles. Matson is in a bit of slump, going 3-for-15 in his last four games. He was 0-for-5 against Cumberland on Wednesday. Matson has 24 putouts on the season.
 
Sophomore catcher Kenny Hirschfeld (New Hyde Park, NY) is a .314 hitter this season in his 12 appearances, collecting eleven total hits and driving in seven runs. Hirschfeld has three doubles and a homer, and he has scored nine runs. Hirschfeld had two hits in each of his first two games and has three multi-hit games on the season. Hirschfeld was 1-for-3 with three runs scored on Wednesday in the win against Cumberland. He has recorded at least one hit in his last three games.
 
Sophomore infielder Tyler Lepage (Macungie, PA) is a .400 hitter with a 1.420 OPS through nine appearances this season. Lepage has four homers, first on the team, and has nine RBIs. His .920 slugging percentage is first on the squad. He has ten total hits, and nine runs scored on the year. Lepage has drawn four walks and been hit by a pair of pitches. Lepage has three multi-hit games this season. He was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, two homers, and three RBI in a 15-7 loss to Patrick & Henry on February 23rd. He went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, four RBI, and two homers in a win against Bryant & Stratton back on February 9th. Lepage missed four games, but was back in the lineup on Wednesday against Cumberland, going 1-for-1 with a run scored in the victory. Lepage has six putouts and eight assists this season.
 
Sophomore pitcher Liam O'Leary (Souderton, PA) leads the team with 20.1 innings pitched, making four appearances, three of which have been starts. O'Leary has a 2-1 record with a 6.20 ERA. He has given up 17 runs, 14 earned, on 24 hits, while striking out a team-high 28 batters and walking eleven. The opposition is hitting .282 against him this year, and he has hit a team-high five batters. O'Leary's best outing happened against Monroe this past weekend, where he went six innings, striking out a season-best nine batters, and allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits. O'Leary has recorded at least five strikeouts in all four of his appearances this season.
 
Sophomore pitcher Ryan Novakowski (Forty Fort, PA) is second on the team in innings pitched, throwing 16.1 innings on the year. Novakowski is 0-2 with a 10.47 ERA in his four appearances, all starts. Novakowski has given up 19 runs, all earned, on 22 hits, with 15 strikeouts and eight walks. Batters are hitting .324 against Novakowski this year. His best outing came against Patrick & Henry in a 5-2 loss on February 22nd, where he went five innings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out five batters. Novakowski threw 5.1 innings against Monroe this past Saturday, giving up five runs on seven hits and striking out three in a game the Falcons eventually lost.
 
Sophomore Trey Sajeski (Holland, PA) is third on the team, pitching 15 innings in four appearances this season. He's 1-1 with a 6.60 ERA. Sajeski has given up 14 runs, 11 earned, on 18 hits, striking out 18 and walking nine batters. The opposition is hitting .277 against him this season. Sajeski threw his best game this past Sunday against Onondaga, striking out a season-high seven in a season-long six innings. He gave up just one run on five hits for the win in the 11-1 victory for Lackawanna.
 
The head coach for the Falcons is Mike McCarry, now in his seventh season with Lackawanna College. McCarry has had loads of success in his time with the Falcons, making the NJCAA Division II World Series in three of his previous six seasons. In 2019, his first year, the Falcons went 32-17, won the Region XIX championship, and then the Northeast District championship on their way to the national showcase. The Falcons duplicated that result in 2021, going 30-16, winning another region and district title, and then appearing in Enid, Oklahoma for the NJCAA DII World Series. McCarry's 2023 team went 40-17, tied for second all-time in program history in wins, and the Falcons won region and district gold, while also winning two games at the NJCAA DII World Series. McCarry is a southeastern Pennsylvania native, and he has ties to Northeast PA dating back to his time playing at Keystone College in 2003. McCarry started his collegiate coaching career at LaSalle University, where he served as the head assistant. He moved on the Stephen F. Austin as a pitching coach, before joining the Lackawanna staff. He is 172-108 in his career at Lackawanna.
 
About Allegany College of Maryland
The Trojans (9-8) come in as winners of four-straight games, themselves, pulling off doubleheader sweeps last weekend against College of South Maryland and Anne Arundel CC. Against AACC, the Trojans were dominant in game one, holding AACC to just three hits in a 10-0 victory. In game two, the Riverhawks got their offense rolling early, but ACM answered back, taking a 7-5 lead after two innings and a 9-5 lead after three. AACC answered with runs in the fifth and sixth to make it 9-7, but the Trojans added two insurance runs in the sixth, then closed the game out in the seventh for the win and the doubleheader sweep.
 
This season, Allegany is hitting .301 as a team, scoring 131 runs, a 7.7 runs per game average, and collecting 34 extra-base hits, including 21 doubles and nine home runs. The Trojans have a .876 OPS, drawing 86 walks and getting hit by 19 pitches this year. They have also struck out 126 times. ACM has 28 stolen bases on the year.
 
Pitching-wise, the Trojans hold a 7.17 ERA as a staff, allowing 111 runs, 81 earned, on 106 hits in 101.2 innings pitched. ACM has struck out 90 batters and walked 91, while hitting 30 batters. The opposition is hitting .295 against the Trojans this season. Defensively, the Trojans have 18 errors and a .956 fielding percentage. Three runners have been caught stealing and they've turned one double play this year.
 
Konner Pittman leads the Trojans with 17 total hits and has a .347 batting average through 16 games this season. Pittman leads the squad with 16 runs scored and has a .898 OPS. He has two doubles and two triples and has driven in 15 runs, second on the team. Pittman has drawn seven walks and struck out nine times, and he has stolen two bases on the year. He has six multi-hit games on the year, including his last three contests. He was a combined 4-for-6 with four runs scored and four RBIs in the sweep against Anne Arundel. Pittman has a six-game hitting streak and has recorded two or more hits in four of those six games.
 
Josh Regalla is second on the team with 14 total hits this season, posting a .341 batting average through 15 games. Regalla has a 1.110 OPS, boosted by his team-high .659 slugging percentage. He leads the team with eight extra-base hits, including five doubles and a pair of homers, and Regalla has a team-high 19 RBIs. He has scored 14 runs this season, tied for second on the team. Regalla has drawn three walks and been hit by six pitches. He has four multi-hit games on the year. Against Harford CC on March 4th, he was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, six RBIs, a double, and a homer. He was a combined 3-for-6 with three runs scored, three RBIs, and a double in the sweep against Anne Arundel.
 
Duke Psoras has 13 total hits and is a .325 hitter this season. Psoras has a .938 OPS and has scored 12 runs, fourth on the squad. Psoras has two homers and ten RBIs this season, and he is tied for third on the team with eight walks. He is also second worst on the team with 15 strikeouts. Psoras is tied for the team-high six stolen bases this season. He had a seven-game hitting streak to start the year, and he has three multi-hit games this season. Psoras was a combined 2-for-5 against Anne Arundel, scoring three runs, driving in three more, and hitting a home run in game two.
 
Johnny Antonelli has eleven total hits and is a .393 hitter for the Trojans this year, posting a 1.064 OPS in 13 games. Antonelli has scored eight runs and driven in ten more. He has one home run on the year. Antonelli is tied for first on the team with ten walks, and he leads the team with a .564 OBP. He has two multi-hit games this season and is on a four-game hitting streak. He appeared in one game against Anne Arundel, going 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI in the 10-0 game one victory.
 
Nick Falla is the pitcher with the most action this season for the Trojans, pitching 22 innings in four appearances, three of which have been starts. Nick is a right-handed pitcher and has a 2.45 ERA and is 2-0 this season. He has given up nine runs, just six earned, on 12 hits, while striking out 28 and walking ten. Teams are hitting .203 against him this season. Falla has recorded at least four strikeouts in all four of his appearances this year. He pitched seven innings of shut-out ball, giving up three hits and striking out a season-high ten batters in a win against Cecil College on February 23rd. Against the College of Southern Maryland last Saturday, he got the win, going six innings and giving up two runs, just one earned, on two hits, while striking out eight batters.
 
Another righty, pitcher Tyler Serb has seen action in 17.1 innings this year, making four appearances, three of which have been starts. Serb is 1-3 with a 3.63 ERA. He has given up 15 runs, just seven earned, on 25 hits, striking out 14 and walking nine. Teams are hitting .342 against Serb this year. Serb got the win in his last appearance, throwing four innings and striking out three while keeping Anne Arundel off the board in the 10-0 win on Sunday.
 
Aidan Walker is a righty who has pitched 16.2 innings on the season in five appearances. Walker is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA, giving up 15 runs, ten of which have been earned, on 16 hits. He's struck out eight batters and walked a team-high eleven. The opposition is hitting .258 against Walker this season. Walker was roughed up in his last outing, giving up seven runs, just two earned, in five innings to Anne Arundel, but he still got the win.
 
Mason Heyne is the head baseball coach at Allegany College of Maryland, now in his fourth full season in charge. He took over on an interim basis in 2021, then was named the head coach for the following season. In all three of his previous years in charge, the Trojans have won 20+ games and qualified for the Region 20 playoffs. Before Heyne arrived, he was the head coach at NCAA DII Davis and Elkins College for five seasons, and he spent time in the summer of 2021 with the North Adams SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. He played for four years at Rider University in New Jersey, helping the Broncs to four consecutive winning seasons and hitting .309 in his career. He holds the Rider records for career RBIs (186) and doubles (67). Heyne just recently won his 100th game at Allegany against Anne Arundel.
 
The Match-Up
Lackawanna has gone 2-2 against Allegany since 2021. The Falcons swept a doubleheader on the road in Cumberland in 2021, and Allegany swept last year's doubleheader at home.
 
Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00pm ET start at Steve Bazarnic Field in Cumberland, MD. There is no video livestream available for the two games on Saturday.
 
Lackawanna College is back in NEPA for its Scranton HS home opener on Tuesday, March 18th, when the Falcons are set to host the #1 Division III team in the land, RCSJ Gloucester, for a single nine-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm ET.
