WREST: Gashi-Brito Goes Unbeaten As Falcons Compete In Scranton

The Falcons Fell In Their Three Duals, But Got Some Individual Wins On The Day

2/8/25

SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna College wrestling dropped in its trio of duals at the University of Scranton Duals on Saturday afternoon in the John Long Center at Scranton.

The Falcons (0-4) fell to King's College by a 48-12 score in the first round, then dropped a 29-18 decision to Utica, before falling 50-6 to the host Scranton Royals.

On the day, Matt Gashi-Brito (Fairfax, VA) was perfect, winning all three of his bouts at 141 lbs., all by pin. His teammate Connor Ondek (Scranton, PA) earned a pair of wins at 157 lbs. on the afternoon, while Edward Lauritsen (Brodheadsville, PA) earned a victory in his three appearances at 125 lbs.

Against King's, the standouts were Gashi-Brito, who defeated his opponent at 141 lbs. with a pin at 2:20, and Ondek, who won his bout early in the second round on a pin at 3:18. Otherwise, the Monarchs earned pin victories against the other three Lackawanna competitors, and won forfeits in the other bouts to take the 48-12 win.

Lackawanna led through the early rounds of the Utica dual, thanks to Lauritsen earning a pin at 3:21 against his opponent at 125 lbs., followed by Gashi-Brito winning by pin in just 34 seconds at 141 lbs. The Falcons led 12-6, and then took an 18-12 lead at 157 lbs., where Ondek pinned his opponent in 2:46. Back-to-back forfeits at 165 and 174 meant that Utica led 24-18, and both teams forfeited at 184 and 197, setting up a bout at 285 that could decide the match. Lackawanna's Adan Salazar (Scranton, PA), normally wrestling at 197, stepped up to face Seth Northrop from Utica. It was one-way traffic for Northrop, though, who won on a technical fall at 19-2, giving the Pioneers the 29-18 victory.

In the final dual of the day for the Falcons, the Royals from the University of Scranton hit the gas early and never let up. A technical fall at 125 lbs. gave the Royals the first points of the dual, and a forfeit at 133 put them ahead 11-0. Gashi-Brito got the Falcons on the board with another fast pin, this one at 34 seconds against Orion Newell from Scranton, putting Lackawanna down 11-6. That would be all for the Falcons in terms of team points, as the other two competing Falcons in the duals, Ondek and Salazar, each lost. Ondek was pinned at 1:21 in the bout at 157, while Salazar battled with Jack McCaffrey at 197 lbs. and fell in a decision, 7-2.

The Falcons have one more tune-up on the schedule with a trip to SUNY Oneonta next week, followed by the NJCAA Gulf Atlantic District Championships, which the Falcons will host on Saturday, February 22nd, inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
