BASE: Six-Run Sixth Propels Lackawanna College To Comeback Win

The Falcons Came From Behind For The Opening Day Victory On The Road

Box Score 2/8/25

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A pair of RBI doubles highlighted a six-run sixth inning, which turned out to be enough to give Lackawanna College baseball the opening-day win, 14-9, over Bryant & Stratton (VA) on the road on Saturday evening.

The Falcons (1-0) trailed 7-4 after five, blowing a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The Bobcats (2-3) scored five runs in the fourth inning, then added a run each in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the fifth innings. That set the stage for the top of the sixth, where sophomores Louis Kegerreis (Murrysville, PA) and Nick Matson (Nanticoke, PA) each smacked RBI doubles. Kegerreis hit a two-run double, and Matson cleared the bases loaded with a three-run double to highlight a six-run sixth inning.

Later, with the Falcons clinging to a 10-8 lead in the top of the ninth, Lackawanna loaded the bases for Kegerreis. It became an excellent opportunity for the good guys to add some insurance. Louis drew a walk to force a run home, then a hit batter made it 12-8, still with the bases full. First-year outfielder Deacon Brown (Williamsport, PA) lined a single that stretched it to 13-8, Falcons, helping give the visitors some much-needed cushion. Matson added a fielder's choice for another run to make it 14-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.

Pitcher Liam O'Leary (Souderton, PA), who came on to start the fourth, pitched four innings in relief to pick up the win, giving up three runs in relief. Lefty George Creighton (Somers, NY) pitched the final two innings, dancing out of some trouble in the ninth. B&S put runners on first and second with nobody out, and the Bobcats lined a single up the middle to score a run. A pop out to right was the first out, and the game itself ended on the next batter. A drive off the end of the bat to right field was caught, and it looked as if the runner at second tagged up correctly and headed to third. However, the Falcons quickly fired the ball in and stepped on the bag at second, and the umpires ruled that Lackawanna doubled up Bryant & Stratton, sealing victory for the Falcons.

Brown was the one who got the scoring started in the top of the first inning, singling home a run to get the Falcons ahead at 1-0. Matson followed with a two-run double that made it 3-0 after one inning. Kenny Hirschfeld (New Hyde Park, NY) added a solo homer, his first as a Falcon and the first of the year for Lackawanna, in the second inning to push the Falcons ahead 4-0, early. The home Bobcats would respond with five runs in the fourth to grab the lead back, which set up the Falcons for the comeback triumph.

The Falcons remain in Virginia for a scheduled doubleheader with Bryant & Stratton on Sunday, February 9th. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 11:00am ET in Virginia Beach. After the doubleheader with the Bobcats, Lackawanna will be off until Saturday, February 15th, when they travel to Supply, NC for a doubleheader with nationally ranked Brunswick CC and USC Sumter.
