BASE: Falcons Fall In Doubleheader To Open Season

Lackawanna College Hit Four Homers In Two Games, But The Hometown Bobcats Scored Early And Often

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 2/10/24

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- A bright first two innings in game one gave the Falcons hope, but it would prove to be a long afternoon for the visitors, as Lackawanna College dropped its first two games of the 2024 campaign to Bryant & Stratton, 9-6 and 13-1, on Saturday afternoon on the campus of the Bobcats.

Lackawanna (0-2) could not have asked for a better start to the year in game one, as Nick Matson (Redshirt-First Year; Nanticoke, PA) hit a leadoff homerun to immediately give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage. Aydan McNelly (Sophomore; Limerick, PA) hit a two-run jack soon after, and the Falcons led 3-0 before an out had been recorded. They added to that lead when Michael Rickert (Sophomore; Moosic, PA) blasted his own homer to make it 4-1 in the top of the second, but the Falcons were undone by a six-run second inning for the Bobcats (5-0), highlighted by a three-run homer to tie the game, and then a two-run double that gave B&S the lead for good.

Matson was 3-for-5 in his debut for the Falcons, while McNelly was 2-for-4. The Falcons drew nine walks, but also struck out nine times and stranded eleven batters. Nick Biasi (First Year; Hazle Township, PA) got the start, but was chased after two innings, giving up seven runs on four hits and walking five batters for the loss.

In game two, a Michael Miller (Sophomore; Lafayette Hill, PA) homer in the second was the lone bright spot, as the Falcons struggled to get going at the plate and in the field in a 13-1 loss in seven innings. Miller's homer came in the top of the second to tie the game at one, but B&S beat up on starter Jace Cunnane (Sophomore; Clarkstown, NY) plating four more runs in the second and then a sixth in the third that chased Cunnane from the game. Lackawanna walked in a run, hit two batters with the bases loaded, threw a wild pitch that scored a run, and gave up three sacrifice hits throughout the game, without mounting much of challenge.

Lackawanna gets right back to it on Sunday, February 11th, when the Falcons are set to face Bryant & Stratton on more time for a nine-inning contest at 12:00pm ET in Virginia Beach.
