Falcons Give Way To Georgia Military in Season Finale

Box Score November 11, 2023

Scranton, PA – On a windy fall afternoon in Scranton, Georgia Military relied on their run game to the tune of 239 yards, while holding the ball for nearly 37 minutes to knock off the #11 Lackawanna College Falcons, 31-24.

The Falcons won the toss and elected to receive. The first drive went 28 yards over 7 plays and ended in a punt. The Bulldogs also struggled to get anything going on their first possession and punted the ball back to Lackawanna after only mustering 4 yards. The Falcons capitalized on good field possession and ended the drive with a 12-yard pass from Hamas Duren to his favorite target, Petey Tucker. GMC then drove 57 yards on 9 plays but came up short, as they missed a 28-yard field goal. It only took the Falcons 3 plays to go 80 yards to take a 14-0 lead on 71-yard run by Terrez Worthy.

The Bulldogs and Falcons exchanged punts before GMC cut the lead in half with a 25-yard scamper by Trequan Jones just under two minutes into the 2nd quarter. Lackawanna countered with a 13-play drive, taking 7 and a half minutes off the clock, but came up with no points and turned the ball over on downs at the Bulldogs 30 yard line. GMC then put together a huge drive of their own, 11 plays and 70 yards taking almost six minutes off the clock that was capped off by a QB keeper by Chip Cooper to tie it up at 14 heading into the half.

The start of the second half saw the Falcons defense force a quick three and out. Duren and the offense marched 82 yards in 6 plays to take a 21-14 lead. Duren connected with freshmen RB Markell Holman on a wide-open play-action throw down the middle of the field. Neither the Falcons nor the Bulldogs could find their footing on the next two drives as they exchanged punts. Trailing by a touchdown, the Bulldogs went 67 yards on 6 plays and tied the game at 21 on a 25-yard run, again by Trequan Jones. The Falcons, looking to strike back, came up empty as Hamas Duren was intercepted on a batted ball intended for Tucker. The Bulldogs went on another long, time-consuming drive marching 42 yards over 5 and half minutes. The Falcons tightened up in the red zone and held GMC to a field goal.

Leading by 3 with 11 minutes remaining, GMC executed a perfect sky kick into the dead spot of the Falcons return, and recovered the kickoff, keeping the Falcons offense off the field. Again, the Lackawanna College defense got stingy, knocking the Bulldogs back 5 yards, and forcing a punt in a short field. The Falcons offense couldn't put anything together and ended up punting the ball away to GMC following a Duren incompletion. GMC took full advantage when Trequan Jones scored his third touchdown of the afternoon to give the Bulldogs a 31-21 advantage. Following the ensuing kickoff, Duren and the offense marched 53 yards behind a roughing the passer penalty, a 32 yard reception by Tucker, and a 7 yard rush by Worthy. The Falcons, trailing by 10, opted for a field goal, rather than try for a TD on fourth down, cutting the Bulldog lead to 7. Following another three and out, the Lackawanna offense took the field with an opportunity to tie the game. Following a sack and incompletion, Duren was picked off for the second time on fourth down. GMC was able to take all but 22 seconds off the clock, allowing the Falcons one last shot. Working against the prevent defense needing 75 yards, the Falcons came up empty as Duren was sacked to end the game.

Georgia Military completed a successful sweep of the Falcons for the first time since the two began playing twice a year. Saint McLeod and Chris Campanelli tied for the team lead with 10 tackles. Nyair Graham added 7 tackles, 2 TFL's, and a sack. Offensively Duren finished 22-33 with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Worthy topped 100 yards for the 9th time this season as he had 110 yards on only 16 carries. Petey Tucker lead the team with 7 catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. The Falcons finish the regular season with a record of 7-3.
