Box Score 9/13/22
DUNMORE, Pa. –
Robert Jarvis Humphries (Soufriere, Dominica) scored a pair of goals, one in the first half and one in the second, and the Lackawanna College men's soccer team was impressive throughout their 4-0 victory over the Lehigh Carbon CC Cougars on Tuesday evening at Schautz Stadium.
The Falcons (1-0) were dominant in possession, securing 60% of the ball and unleashing 25 shots, 13 of which were on target. Humphries scored a goal off a beautiful cross from
Connor Hillis (Vestal, NY) in the first half, then rocketed home a right-footed shot from the left side in the second half. Lackawanna also got goals from
Kevin Andrade (Scranton, PA) and
Darlyn Uceta (Philadelphia, PA), while getting five saves from
Jahdale Givans (Bronx, NY).
Lackawanna College held an early advantage in possession, and kept probing down the left channel against the Lehigh Carbon defense, but the Falcons couldn't quite find their way onto the end of anything. The Cougars (0-3-1) played solid defense in the early stages, but couldn't hang onto possession long against the Falcon press.
Eventually, the pressure started to show cracks in the defense, as the Falcons started to pepper the keeper with shots, crosses, and corners. In the 25
th minute, the Falcons earned a corner on the left side. After the defense seemingly cleared the danger,
Gerard Borosky (Scott Twp, PA) pressed high and won the ball inside the Cougar half, quickly sliding a pass to Andrade, who found
Ahmed Kaid (Staten Island, NY) down the left side. Kaid tried a low cross, and the defense again cleared, but Hillis settled it, quickly surveyed, and launched a looping right-footed cross into the box, right onto the foot of Humphries, who volleyed it into the top right corner for the first goal of the game.
Just a few minutes later, Humphries pulled the trigger on another shot from the top of the box, but missed just high. Later in the half, Humphries pulled another one just wide of the net. The Falcons had the pressure, but the half ended 1-0.
As the second half got underway, Lehigh Carbon came out of their shell a little more, forcing the Falcons to defend in the early goings. In the 51
st minute, the Cougars earned a long throw-in, and came dangerously close to settling in the box, but the Falcons cleared their lines, and a big boot downfield found a streaking Humphries, who forced a spectacular leaping save from the keeper to keep it at just 1-0.
The Falcons ramped up the pressure some more and, in the 54
th minute,
Willis Smith (Oxford, England) probed his way forward from his defensive midfield spot and fired a left-footed shot, but the keeper managed to swallow it up with no real trouble. Lackawanna had another opportunity in the 55
th, when a Humphries cross on a breakaway found
Anthony D'Angelis (Holtsville, NY) all alone at the top of the box, but the keeper once again came up with a big save to parry away the right-footed blast. The ensuing corner kick found the head of Uceta, a Falcon baseball player making his first appearance on the pitch for Lackawanna College, but he couldn't get enough power behind it to trouble the keeper. Still, the Falcon pressure was ratcheting up.
In the 61
st minute, Lackawanna would strike again. A corner kick from the right side was deflected off the head of a Falcon player and skipped out to the left side of the box. Andrade chased it down, switched to his right foot, and curled a shot up and over the outstretched arm of a diving keeper to make it 2-0, Falcons.
A few minutes later, in the 64
th, Andrade was brought down in the box and the Falcons were awarded a penalty, but Humphries couldn't keep it under the bar, keeping the game at 2-0.
From there, Lehigh Carbon played with more energy, and in the 67
th minute, the Cougars had their best chance. A free kick from the right side was launched to the back post, where a header down was saved by Givans, who had to react quickly on the rebound, as his first save was deflected to the right foot of another Lehigh Carbon player. Givans dove to his left to push the shot away, and the second rebound was launched high over the fence and out of play, letting the Falcons breathe.
The Falcons had another chance in the 70
th minute, when a cross on the left side from Kaid almost connected with the head of Uceta, who couldn't quite get all of it, as the ball glanced off his head and wide of the net.
Two minutes later, a Kaid cross from the right side found Smith, who tried a half volley with his right foot. His shot deflected off of Uceta, and the keeper read the awkward carom and managed to punch it away.
Lackawanna College really began to get the pressure up again, playing the rest of the way almost exclusively in the Lehigh Carbon half of the field. That pressure would pay off in the 84
th minute, when Andrade picked up a loose ball on the left side and slid a pass to Humphries, who switched to his left foot and unleashed a rocket that found the right side of the net, making it 3-0, Falcons, and giving him his second goal.
In the 87
th minute, Lehigh Carbon took a gamble on a long free kick when they brought the keeper forward. The header glanced off a Falcon defender, and the Falcons quickly cycled the ball out to the right side, where Kaid picked his head up and powered a pass into the gap, past the defenders, allowing Uceta to beat the defender to the ball and tap home the final score, making it 4-0, Lackawanna.
The win is the first for head coach
Zachary Shiposh in his Falcon career. The four goals scored are the most the Falcons have scored in a game since September 29
th, 2019, when Lackawanna College beat Manor College 4-0.
Next up, the Falcons hit the road for a contest at Delaware County CC on Thursday, September 15
th. Kickoff is at 3:30pm ET.
