BSB: Falcons Drop Two Games Against Mercer County CC On Friday Afternoon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 4/29/22

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lackawanna College baseball team came into the weekend with a clear path forward, if they wanted to secure the one-seed in the Region XIX tournament next week. Two games later, the road forward is now much more difficult. The Mercer County CC Vikings swept the Falcons in a crucial region doubleheader, winning game one 3-1, and then coming back from a seven-run deficit to win 12-10 in game two on Friday afternoon in Scranton.

The Falcons (21-14, 8-2) came into the weekend in second place in the Region standings, needing to match results with Delaware Tech this weekend before the two met on Sunday, but now sit in third, as the Vikings (25-15, 10-2) move into the two-spot with the victory. Delaware Tech (8-0) will play against Morris on Saturday, before travelling to Scranton to take on the Falcons on Sunday.

Game One Recap: Mercer County CC 3 – 1 Lackawanna College
The Falcons wasted a strong outing from Kyle Scott, who pitched seven innings, as Lackawanna fell 3-1 to Mercer in the first game of their doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Scranton.

The Falcons (21-13, 8-1) didn't struggle to get baserunners early, but couldn't seem to scratch them across. Meanwhile, Mercer (24-15, 9-2) scored one run apiece in the second, third, and sixth innings, piecing together a lead, while getting a solid pitching and defensive outing on the diamond.

Scott pitched around a walk in the top of the first to keep it scoreless, and the Falcons had the bases loaded, but came up empty in the first inning. Mercer was able to push a run across in the second, and the Falcons had a runner on third to answer in the bottom frame, but they couldn't get the ball in play, keeping the Vikings up 1-0.

The third looked much like the second, as the Vikings scratched another run across to take a 2-0 lead, and the Falcons had a runner on third in the bottom frame, but still couldn't bring the run home.

Scott got rolling for the Falcons, but gave up a solo homerun in the top of the sixth that pushed the Vikings lead to 3-0. George Castro finally pushed the Falcons across with an RBI double, and the Falcons had runners in scoring position, poised to score more, but couldn't convert.

Scott kept things quiet in the top half, and the falcons had runners in position in the bottom frame, but it wasn't to be, as the Falcons dropped game one 3-1, their first loss in Region XIX play this year.

Game Two Recap: Mercer County CC 12 – 10 Lackawanna College
Baseball Final Score Graphic vs. Mercer County CC 4-29 Game 2

In a game that was more representative of the Falcon offense, Lackawanna plated ten runs in five innings, taking a 10-3 lead into the sixth, only to see the Vikings mount a comeback, scoring nine runs in the final two innings to complete a massive turnaround and win, 12-10, in game two on Friday afternoon in Scranton.

The Falcons (21-14, 8-2) finally got their bats working, and got a strong start from Aiden Starn, but as the game went on, the Vikings got more comfortable, and eventually rolled their way to the big come-from-behind win.

Things started brightly for the Falcons, as Starn threw up a scoreless top of the first, and the Falcons plated four runs in the bottom frame.

Things remained quiet until the bottom of the third, when Zachary Walsh got on base and drove in a run to make it 5-0, chasing the starter for the Vikings. Walsh came around to score in the inning, putting the Falcons up 6-0.

Mercer County (25-15, 10-2) got on the board with a solo shot in the top of the fourth, and that seemed to wake their bats up. The Falcons answered with a run in the bottom frame, but the Vikings scored two more to make it 7-3 after the top of the fifth.

Lackawanna College managed to add four more runs to, seemingly, put them at a comfortable distance, but the Vikings rallied to score three runs on two homeruns in the top of the sixth, cutting the deficit to 10-6. Lackawanna tried to answer in the bottom frame, but couldn't convert on a pair of runners in scoring position.

The top of the seventh did the thing for the Vikings, who scored six runs in the frame to completely flip the game on its head. Suddenly needing to put more runs on the board, the Falcons had runners in position to score, but just couldn't get the hit to bring them home, ending the game on a strikeout, and sending the Vikings bench into a celebration.

The Falcons get back to action on Saturday, April 30th , when they host Harford CC for a single, nine-inning game that will start at 3:30pm ET at Scranton High's baseball field. There will be a video livestream available via the Lackawanna College Athletics YouTube Channel at www.lackawannafalcons.com/YouTube.

The Sunday, May 1st doubleheader against Delaware Tech will start at 2:00pm ET with the fifth inning of game one from two weeks ago, with the scored tied at one, and Del Tech batting. The second game will follow soon after. Both games will have a video livestream available via the Lackawanna College Athletics YouTube Channel at www.lackawannafalcons.com/YouTube.
