BSB: Falcons Pick Up First Wins Of 2022 On Tuesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 3/8/22

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Lackawanna College Baseball team grabbed its first pair of wins on the 2022 campaign on Tuesday afternoon, knocking off Mid Michigan and Bay College in the span of six hours at the Cal Ripken Baseball Complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Falcons won the first game in impressive fashion, taking a 13-6 win over the Lakers of Mid Michigan. Later in the day, the Falcons knocked off the Norse from Bay College, 15-5, to complete the sweep on the day.

Game One Recap: Lackawanna College 13 – 6 Mid Michigan CC
The Falcons faced off against the Lakers from Mid Michigan in their first game of the day, a 10:00am start in South Carolina.

Lackawanna College allowed five runs in the first inning, but rallied to put up 13 runs on 15 hits, including four homeruns, cruising to a 13-6 victory, their first of the year. George Castro went 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a pair of homeruns, including a three-run shot in the second to get the Falcons on the board, and the go-ahead two-run bomb in the third to give the Falcons the lead. Joining Castro were Christian Rush and Daniel Keenan, who each went yard for the Falcons, who pounded out 15 hits, including six extra base hits. Samuel Daniels got the win, coming on in the 2nd inning and putting up three innings of no-hit ball, striking out eight batters and only walking two.

The Falcons (1-4) did not get off to the start they were hoping for. After wasting a lead-off single in the first with three straight outs, Dan Petrouskie took the mound for Lackawanna College. The Lakers (5-2), who had won both of their games on Monday, immediately jumped out, getting lead-off man Andrew Charters aboard with a single, and bringing him home on a triple from Aidan Arbogast. A walk, followed by an HBP, loaded the bases with no one out. An RBI single brought one runner home, which was followed by an RBI double, making it 4-0, Mid Michigan, still with no one out. Once the dust settled on the bottom of the first, the Falcons were in a 5-0 hole, and needed to get their offense, which had struggled through the first four games, up and running. Which, of course, is exactly what they did.

It started in the top of the second, when Quinn Hanafin singled to start the inning, and Eli Riley got on base after getting hit by a pitch. With two one and nobody out, George Castro blasted a three-run homer over the outfield wall, bringing the Falcons right back into the things. After a pair of outs, the inning continued when Daniel Helfgott and Christian Rush singled back-to-back, putting two on with two out. Helfgott would come around to score on two consecutive wild pitches, making it 5-4 before the Lakers would get out of trouble.

That half inning seemed to energize the Falcons, and not just on offense. Samuel Daniels came on in relief to start the second, and he got things going immediately, striking out the side, while pitching around a pair of walks and an error to keep the Lakers off the board.

Castro would strike again in the third, when he drove another pitch over the outfield wall, scoring a pair of runs and giving the Falcons the 6-5 lead. Jacob Simpson and Julian Thompson followed up with back-to-back doubles, scoring Simpson and making it 7-5, Falcons.

The Falcons tacked on more in the top of the fourth inning, when Daniel Keenan got a hold of a pitch and cranked it to the outfield, sailing it over the fence and giving the Falcons another two-run homer, making it 9-5.

Lackawanna, after another scoreless inning from Daniels, had two on and two out in the top of the fifth, when Cody Fleischer singled, scoring a pair of runs for the suddenly on-fire Lackawanna offense. Keenan followed with a double, scoring Fleischer and giving the Falcons a 12-5 advantage.

Mason Drummond relieved Daniels in the bottom of the fifth, and, after giving up a double, was an out away from ending the inning, when a wild pitch allowed the runner to score from third, cutting the lead to 12-6. Drummond recovered to get out of the inning quickly.

The Falcons tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh, when Christian Rush sent a solo shot over the wall, the fourth homer of the day for the Falcons and his second on the season, making it 13-6 for the Falcons.

With Ty Morris on the mound, the Falcons closed things out, picking up their first win of the 2022 season.

Game Two Recap: Lackawanna College 15 - 5 Bay College

Baseball Final Score Graphic vs. Bay College 3-8

Lackawanna College pounced on Bay College right from the jump, scoring eleven runs in the first inning on their way to a 15-5 win in five innings against the Norse on Tuesday night in Myrtle Beach.

Spencer Butz had a three-run inside the park homerun, as the Falcons (2-4) had a bottom of the first where they brought 15 batters to the plate, cranking out nine hits and building a sizable advantage. That would be all that Marc DeNunzio needed, as the pitcher went four innings, giving up seven hits and two runs, while striking out seven batters, picking up his first win of the year.

Butz went 1-for-2 with two walks and that inside the park homer, while Daniel Helfgott went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Cody Fleischer was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. The Norse (1-5) put a pair of runs on the board in the second inning, but the Falcons added four more in the third inning to extend the lead past ten runs.

Marc DeNunzio got the Falcons off to a good start in the top of the first, pitching around a single and a walk to hold the Norse scoreless. The big bottom half started for the Falcons with a Daniel Helfgott lead-off single. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Cody Fleischer doubled a pair of runs home to give the Falcons the early lead. After Ludwick grounded out, a single loaded the bases again, with just one away. A walk brought one run home, and David Curreri singled to bring another run home, making it 4-0. Zachary Walsh came up and joined the fun, singling home another pair of runs to put the Falcons up 6-0. After another run scored, there was still just one out when Spencer Butz came back up with two runners on. Butz blasted one into the outfield, and sped around the base paths, giving himself a three-run inside the park homer, and the Falcons a 10-0 lead, still with just one out. An Erik Ludwick double scored one more run for the Falcons before the magic ran out in the first.

The Norse struck back in the top of the second with four straight two-out hits that scored two runs, but the Falcons managed to get the third out on the fourth hit, gunning down a baserunner at third to end the inning.

Lackawanna got the bats going again in the bottom of the third, when George Castro got a one-out triple to put a runner aboard. Jacob Simpson came in as a pinch runner, and Derrick Newman immediately cashed in with an RBI single, extending the Falcon lead to 12-2. Later, an Ian Murphy two-out single brought home Newman, and the Falcons plated two more runs to make it 15-2 after three.

DeNunzio pitched around a pair of singles in the top of the fourth, striking out his sixth and seven batters of the night. He'd give way to Junior Severino in the fifth, who gave up one hit and three runs before closing things out, and giving the Falcons their second win on the day.

Lackawanna College has a quick turnaround, getting back to work tomorrow, Wednesday, March 9th, at 9:00am ET, when they take on Penn State New Kensington. They have a second game at around noon against Mid Michigan CC.
