Florence, SC – The Lackawanna College Baseball team put runners on base, consistently, throughout their two games on Sunday, but the Falcons bats couldn't bring those runners home, resulting in a 3-0 loss to Florence-Darlington Tech in game one, and a 9-1 loss to Patrick & Henry CC in game two at Florence-Darlington Tech's Dailey Field in doubleheader action.
Â
Game One Recap: Florence-Darlington Tech 3 – 0 Lackawanna College
The first game of the day saw the Falcons take on the hosts from Florence-Darlington Tech in their second match-up of the season.
Â
Both teams went scoreless through four innings, but the hosts plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and one more in the sixth, and the Falcons' offense couldn't find the runs to respond.
Â
The Falcons (0-3) went down in order to start the game, and it was up to pitcher
Kyle Scott, getting his first action of the year while still recovering from injury, to give the Falcons a boost. Scott got a pair of strikeouts and pitched around a two-out single to induce a groundball and get out of the first.
Â
Lackawanna threatened in the second inning after
Quinn Hanafin reached with a lead-off single, followed by
Eli Riley hopping on with a two-out single. Both runners advanced to second and third with two away, but a strikeout ended the Falcons threat.
Â
It seemed like the Stingers (14-7) might break through in the second, when a two-out pitch with a runner on second was lined into center field, but
Christian Rush made a spectacular diving catch to deny the scoring opportunity and keep it knotted at 0.
Â
The third inning was uneventful, with the Falcons wasting a leadoff single and the Scott striking out the side against Flo-Dar in the bottom half of the inning, but Scott's day would be done, and the Falcons would hand the ball to
Derrick Newman.
Â
After a scoreless top half of the fourth, Newman got out of a jam, after giving up a single and a walk to start the inning, inducing a line out double play to end the threat.
Â
The Falcons went quick in the top half of the fifth, and that was all the Stingers needed to finally find some runs. A lead-off single, and a wild pitch, put a runner on second with no one out. After a sacrifice bunt pushed the runner to third, an RBI single brought the runner home to give Florence-Darlington the breakthrough and a 1-0 lead. They'd move the runner over on a stolen base, followed by a balk, and drive in another run on a groundout to make it 2-0.
Â
After another 1-2-3 inning from the Falcons in the top of the sixth, Flo-Dar would strike again, this time against
Mason Drummond for the Falcons. The lead-off batter was hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a fly-out, an RBI single brought the run in to make it 3-0. The Stingers hoped to make it more, but a play at the plate for the Falcons got the third out.
Â
Unfortunately for Lackawanna College, the offense still struggled in the top of the seventh, going down in order to end the game and hand the win to Florence-Darlington Tech.
Â
Game Two Recap: Patrick & Henry 9 – 1 Lackawanna College
The Falcons faced the Patriots from Patrick & Henry in game two of their doubleheader on Sunday at Florence-Darlington Tech, also the second time this year the two squads have met.
Â
Lackawanna College (0-4) left eight baserunners stranded in the first five innings, including loading the bases twice without scoring, while allowing the Patriots (10-6) to slowly build a 5-0 lead over the same span. After a four-run bottom of the sixth blew the game open, the Falcons would add their lone run for the day in the top half of the seventh before the end.
Â
After a scoreless top half of the first for Lackawanna College,
Keon Burkholder got the start for the Falcons, for his first action of the season. The Patriots touched him up for a run in the bottom half of the first, but the Falcons looked like they might have something cooking in the top half of the second.
Â
A pair of runners reached for Lackawanna College, but the Falcons couldn't convert, stranding the runners and wasting their opportunity. PHCC would make the Falcons pay, plating two more runs as Burkholder worked into and out of trouble in the bottom of the second.
Â
Again, the Falcons threatened in the top of the third, this time loading the bases, but the Patriots danced out of trouble, as the Falcons failed to convert. PHCC tried to get something going in the bottom half, but the Falcons got a boost from a laser from catcher
Cole Casamento, stopping a stolen base attempt from the Patriots.
Â
After a scoreless top of the inning, Burkholder would make way for
Matthew Stam on the mound for the Falcons, and Stam, after giving up a run, would also get some help from Casamento, who threw out another runner to give the Falcons a boost.
Â
It seemed like the Falcons had something brewing in the top of the fifth, loading the bases and bringing the tying run to the plate. Unfortunately, the Patriots danced out of trouble again, as the Falcons stranded the bases loaded once more.
Â
After the Patriots added runs in the bottom half of the fifth, the Falcons were hoping to get the offense up and running, but the top of the sixth went nowhere, and, at that point, the PHCC bats woke up, scoring four in the bottom frame, before the Falcons added one run in the top of the seventh to round out the scoring.
Â
Lackawanna College gets a day to travel and lick its wounds before its next games on Tuesday, March 8
th, when the Falcons take on Mid Michigan CC and Bay College at the Cal Ripken Experience Baseball Complex in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Falcons take on the Lakers of Mid Michigan at 10:00am ET on Tuesday, and then take on Bay College at 6:00pm ET later that day.
