BSB: Falcons Win Doubleheader Against PSU New Kensington and Mid Michigan on Wednesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 3/9/22

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Lackawanna College Baseball team is officially on a roll, thanks to a doubleheader sweep over Penn State New Kensington and Mid Michigan CC on Wednesday, March 9th, at the Cal Ripken Experience Baseball Complex in Myrtle Beach, SC.

The Falcons took the first game in just five innings, blasting the Nittany Lions by a 10-0 score. They'd do similar damage to Mid Michigan, steadily building a lead that the Lakers couldn't truly assail, running away with a 9-1 win to run their win streak to four straight games and even their overall record. The Falcons, after a combined eight runs in their first four losses, have scored nine or more runs in each of their four wins.

Game One Recap: Lackawanna College 10 – 0 PSU New Kensington (5 Innings)
Lackawanna College used a five-run first inning to bury the Nittany Lions, building an early lead and cruising to victory. Quinn Hanafin went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Daniel Keenan was 2-for-2 with two runs scored for the Falcons. Matthew Stam picked up the win, pitching four scoreless innings and striking out five batters, while giving up three hits.

The Falcons (3-4) had to dance around some trouble in the top of the first innings, when Kensington (2-3) loaded the bases with two outs, thanks to drawing three walks against Falcons starter Brandon Holzinger. Holzinger got out of the jam, getting a liner to second base to end the top half and strand the runners.

Lackawanna righted the ship immediately in the bottom frame, as the bases were loaded with nobody out within the first three batters. After Daniel Helfgott came home to score and make it 1-0, Quinn Hanafin singled to bring home Christian Rush, making it 2-0 Falcons, still with nobody out. A Spencer Butz sac fly brought another run across, and hits from Keenan and Cole Casamento helped the Falcons scored and build a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

Matthew Stam came out for the Falcons in the second inning, and immediately got himself a 1-2-3 second inning, striking out a pair of batters. A Quinn Hanafin RBI double in the bottom half made it 6-0, Falcons, after two.

The Falcons put three more on the board in the bottom of the third, twice getting the bases loaded with nobody out, thanks to the squad drawing walks. The Falcons ended the inning with a 9-0 margin.

Stam kept firing up zeroes for the Falcon defense, and the offense gave him the mercy rule margin in the bottom of the fifth. After a lead-off walk, Aiden Starn looked in danger of being stranded, but Giovanni Lopez doubled him home to give the Falcons the ten-run margin, and the win.

Game Two Recap: Lackawanna College 9 – 1 Mid Michigan CC

Baseball Final Score Graphic vs. Mid Michigan CC 3-9

The Falcons faced a Mid Michigan squad in game two that they had previously beaten 13-6 just one day earlier. With Cameron King on the hill, the Falcons were mixing a few more youngsters and veterans throughout the lineup, experimenting with what they had.

Early on, it looked like both teams were struggling to find runs, but it would be the Lakers (5-4) who broke through, with a solo shot in the second inning to give themselves an early 1-0 advantage. That would be one of only two hits that King gave up in an otherwise stellar outing, as he went four innings and gave up just that one run, while striking out five batters.

The Falcons (4-4) got their bats on track in the third inning, when George Castro blasted his third homer of the year, a two-run shot, to make it 2-1, Falcons.

From there, the runs started coming in waves, as Lackawanna College, on either side of a short rain delay, kept scoring, while holding the Lakers without much to speak of at the plate. Three runs in the bottom of the fourth, followed by a run in the bottom of the fifth, and three more in the sixth, made it 9-1 Falcons, which they'd hold to for their fourth straight win.

The Falcons get right back to work early in the morning on Thursday, March 11th, when they take on the Danville Area CC Jaguars in the first game of a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00am ET. The second game of the doubleheader will pit the Falcons against the Hawks from Henry Ford College, with first pitch scheduled for that one at 11:45am ET.

There will be a video livestream available for both games via Playsight. It is a subscription-based service, and there is a monetary cost to access live and on-demand video streams.
