Falcons Clipped In Season Opener

Iowa Central Scores 21 Unanswered In The 4th Quarter To Seal Comeback

Box Score 9/5/21

FORT WAYNE, In. – The #11 Tritons of Iowa Central CC scored 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter, completing a come-from-behind victory, 28-21, over #9 Lackawanna College in a match-up of top-15 NJCAA teams.

The Falcons (0-1) had forced the Tritons (1-0) into four straight punts to open the 3rd quarter, and had scored on the fourth punt after Cohen Russell had a spectacular 75-yd return to the endzone, giving Lackawanna College a 21-7 lead with 0:54 seconds to go in the 3rd.

From that point, the Falcons were outgained by the Tritons 196 to 59, as Iowa Central CC scored on three straight possessions, all on touchdown passes from quarterback Byron Jarrett to receiver Desna Washington.

Lackawanna College got the ball back with a little under two minutes to go in the fourth, pinned inside their own 20, but the offense couldn't connect on their pass attempts, and the Falcons turned it over on downs. From there, Iowa Central would kneel it out for the win.

The Falcons got the ball to start the game, and drove to the Iowa Central 15-yd line before stalling and turning over on downs. The teams traded punts, but Iowa Central got deep into Lackawanna territory on the second possession. Early in the 2nd Quarter, with a 3rd-and-goal at the Lackawanna 5-yd line, Tyrece Mills snagged a tipped pass in the secondary and intercepted the Tritons in the endzone, ending the scoring threat.

The celebrations would be short-lived, however, as the Falcons threw an interception at their own 43-yd line, giving the ball right back to the Tritons, who would waste no time and score four plays later on a Jarrett 12-yd run.

The teams would trade punts, but the Iowa Central punt would pin Lackawanna all the way back at their two-yard line with 5:36 to go in the quarter. The Falcons would mount an impressive 8 play, 98-yd TD drive, aided by a 33-yd pass to Delvin Palmer and a 15-yd pass interference penalty. The scoring play was a 24-yd strike from Barry Brown to Joshua Dodd. The Falcons trailed 7-6 after the missed extra point.

Lackawanna College would strike again, after a bizarre three-and-out for Iowa Central where the snap sailed over the punter's head, and, surrounded by Falcons, Bilhal Kone somehow go the punt off from his endzone. The ball ricocheted around, and, after a mad scramble for it, the officials gave Lackawanna the football at the Triton 34-yd line with 15 seconds left. Barry Brown would connect with Joshua Dodd once again, throwing a 34-yd strike in the corner of the endzone to give the Falcons the lead. Brown's 3-yd scamper on the 2-point try made it 14-7 at halftime.

The Falcons forced a punt on the first drive of the 3rd Quarter, and drove from their own 26 down to the Iowa Central 8, before the offense stalled. The Falcons attempted the 25-yd FG, but the kick sailed wide left.

After another Iowa Central punt, the ensuing possession ended prematurely for Lackawanna College when a Barry Brown pass got hung up in the air and intercepted by the Iowa Central defense.

The teams traded punts, then, with just over a minute to go in the 3rd, and the score still 14-7 in favor of Lackawanna College, Iowa Central punted for the fourth time in a row. Returner Cohen Russell, who earlier had let a punt bounce by him to be downed deep in Falcon territory, caught this punt on the sideline at the 25-yard line, burst forward to the 40, before darting to his right and racing across the field, sprinting up the right sideline and, after dodging one last tackler, waltzing into the endzone. It put the Falcons up 21-7 with 0:54 to play in the 3rd Quarter, and set up the dramatic 4th Quarter that would unwind from there.

Lackawanna College held the Tritons to just 51 yards rushing, but gave up 299 yards through the air to Jarrett, who threw three touchdown passes, all to his receiver Washington, who finished with eight catches for 125 yards.

Antwan Squire led the Falcons with 49 yards rushing on 16 carries, while Barry Brown had 246 yards through the air, with a pair of touchdown passes to Joshua Dodd. Dodd would finish with three catches for 66 yards, while Cohen Russell led the team with six catches for 35 yards. Alphonso Foray led the team with 68 yards on five catches, while Delvin Palmer had 65 yards on his five receptions.

The Falcons have a bye week this upcoming weekend, before they spring back into action on September 18th. That day, Lackawanna College travels to Greensboro, NC to play ASA Miami. The kickoff is set for 1pm.
