Georgetown, DE - The Lackawanna College baseball team swept its Saturday doubleheader against Delaware Technical & Community College to put them in first place in the Region 19 Division II standings.
Lackawanna scored first in the opening game and then scored frequently as they beat Del Tech by a 10-5 score. It was the seventh straight game that the Falcons scored ten or more runs in the game.
The key to today's game-one win was the pitching of
Zach Klapak. Klapak held the Spirit to five runs on two hits over six and a third innings. He struck out 16 of the 19 outs recorded during his time on the mound and earned his fourth win of the season.
Matt Stam shut down Del-Tech in the 7
th on no hits in two-thirds of an inning after Klapak gave up three runs without relinquishing a base-hit earlier in the frame. Klapak received credit for the win.
At the plate the Falcons recorded ten hits. Eight of those hits drove in nine runs.
Brandon Ernst singled in the initial run in the first inning with a single. In the second
John Heltebran slammed Lackawanna's only home run. In the third
Colin Macko registered an RBI single. In the fourth
Jake Kelchner, Ray Vorhees and Ernst all drove in runs with doubles. Vorhees recorded two more RBIs with a single in the fifth while
Julian Thompson scored a run on a single in the seventh. The only base hits that didn't drive in a run were doubles by Heltebran and Vorhees
Four Lackawanna players had multi-hit days. They were Ray Vorhees (4-2-2-3, Two 2Bs),
Brandon Ernst (3-1-2-2, 2B), John Helteban (4-2-2-1, 2B, HR) and
Julian Thompson (3-2-2-1).
In the second game Lackawanna scored three runs in the first three innings. Del-Tech bounced back with a run in the sixth. In the seventh, the Falcons rallied for four runs, a cushion that the Spirit could not overcome even though they scored twice in the bottom of the inning.
The Falcons were led by
Brandon Ernst who slammed a two-run homer in the third and drove in another run with a single in the seventh. He was the only Lackawanna player with a multi-hit contest. Besides Ernst's homer the only other Falcon extra-base hits were doubles by
Matt Nyce and
Quinn Hanafin.
Lackawanna's pitching staff excelled in the nightcap.
Kyle Scott started the game and shutout Del Tech for five innings on one hit while striking out eight. Scott was credited with the win, his fifth of the year. Both
Justin Gohsler and
Jaden Tabler pitched in relief and were credited with holds.
