GARDEN CITY, NY – Three first quarter touchdowns and a dominant defensive effort highlighted an impressive win for the Lackawanna College football team, 41-6, over the #1 NJCAA Division III Nassau Community College Lions on Saturday afternoon on Long Island.
Â
The Falcons (6-3) scored touchdowns on their first three possessions of the game to take a 21-6 lead over the Lions with 5:04 to play in the first period. Nassau (6-3) answered the first score of the game with one of their own, but were held scoreless the rest of the way by a Falcon defense that forced five turnovers, blocked a punt, and had seven tackles-for-loss on the day.
Â
Lackawanna College was dominant in the trenches, piling up a season-high 283 yards on the ground, averaging 7.6 yards per carry, and clearing the way for three separate 50+ yard rushers on the day, including
Deondre Scott's team-high 108 yards and two touchdowns.
Â
The defense, after the initial scoring drive from Nassau, was stellar, ceding only 225 yards of total offense the rest of the way, and forcing five turnovers, including three interceptions and two fumbles. Lackawanna College got seven tackles-for-loss and seven pass break-ups on the day, holding the Lions scoreless through the rest of the game.
Samuel Graham led the Falcons in tackles with eight total tackles, and a team-high six solos, while
Avanti Lockhart had seven total tackles, two interceptions, a fumble recovery, a half tackle-for-loss, a blocked extra point, and a pass break-up. Â
Â
The game would start quickly for the Falcons, as they scored in just four plays on the opening drive, highlighted by a 52-yard run from
Cohen Russell that put the Falcons in Nassau territory. That run would set up a
Barry Brown pass to
Delvin Palmer for 17-yards, making it 7-0 Lackawanna just two-and-a-half minutes into the game.
Â
Nassau would score on the ensuing possession, but Lockhart burst through the line and blocked the extra point, ensuring the Falcons would hang onto their slim lead. Lackawanna College would score quickly on their next possession, going 75 yards in five plays, punctuated with Brown's second of four touchdown passes, this time to
Joshua Dodd from five yards out.
Â
The Lions would drive to the Falcon 44-yard line, but a fumble by the Nassau quarterback was picked up by
Harold O'Neal, who rumbled for 23 yards to the Nassau 31-yard line. Lackawanna would waste little time, as a
Barry Brown 29-yard pass to
Colbie Young set the Falcons up on the one-yard line, where Scott would score the first of his two rushing touchdowns. The Falcons led 21-6 with 5:47 to go in the first quarter.
Â
After the teams traded a few possessions into the second quarter, The Falcons overcame an interception deep in Nassau territory when the defense forced a punt, which was then blocked by
William Hackett and recovered at the Lion 15-yard line. Lackawanna punched it in immediately, as Brown found Dodd on a 15-yard slant to make it 27-6 with 8:40 to go in the first half.
Â
Neither team would add points before the end of the half, which included a nearly hour long delay because of weather with just 1:36 to go before halftime. Once play resumed, the Falcons had the ball on the Nassau 33-yard line with 1:04 to play in the first half, but couldn't convert before time ran out.
Â
Both teams traded punts to start the third, and a Nassau drive took them to the Lackawanna 22-yard line, but several mistakes backed the Lions into a 4
th and 23 from the Falcon 35, where an incomplete pass would end the drive on downs. The Falcons struck quickly, moving down the field in six plays, capped by a two-yard touchdown pass from Brown to
Colbie Young to make it 34-6, late in the third quarter.
Â
An interception by
Aakeem Snell on the next possession gave the Falcons the ball back as the fourth quarter started, but Lackawanna College couldn't do anything with the turnover. Both teams traded punts back and forth, until Lockhart intercepted Nassau for the second time, putting the Falcons on the Lion 38-yard line with 9:36 to play.
Â
Lackawanna College would take advantage of the field position, running on five straight plays, capped by a 24-yard touchdown run from Scott, which made it 41-6 after the
Cameron Ceccotti extra point.
Â
Fittingly, the last Nassau possession was ended when
Dewayne Grantham forced the fifth turnover of the game, stripping the ball from a Lion receiver at the Falcon 35-yard line, where Lockhart pounced on it. From there, Lackawanna College would bleed out the clock, finishing out the game and giving the Falcons the win.
Â
Brown would finish with 195 yards passing and four touchdowns, two going to Dodd, and one apiece to Palmer and Young.
Jasiah Purdie led the Falcons with five catches on the day, for 29 yards. Scott was the rushing leader at 108 yards, while Squire pitched in with 70 yards on eight carries.
Â
Lackawanna College has one more game left in the regular season, when the Falcons travel to Milledgeville, Georgia to take on the Georgia Military College Bulldogs. The game is set for a 1:00pm ET start at Saturday, November 20
th.
