FB: Lackawanna College Shuts Out Sussex County, 52-0

Box Score 10/30/21

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lackawanna College football team played their most complete defensive game of the season, limiting the visiting Sussex County CC Skylanders to just 139 yards of total offense and no points in a dominant 52-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Scranton's Memorial Stadium.

The Falcons (5-2) forced four turnovers, giving the offense plenty of opportunities to pile up 26 first downs, 388 yards combined through the air, and 550 yards of total offense. Barry Brown threw a pair of touchdowns and caught another off a pass from Antwan Squire.

Barry Brown was 12-for-24 for 227 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the game, while Brayden Hawkins went 9-for-17 and 153 yards and his own two touchdowns, all in the second half, as the Falcons had eleven different receivers catch a pass on the afternoon.

Lackawanna College won the coin toss and elected to receive, taking the opening kick and marching 72 yards in just six plays, punctuated by a Brown touchdown pass to Delvin Palmer for 29 yards in the corner of the endzone, making it 7-0 with 11:56 to play in the first quarter.

Both teams traded punts back and forth for five straight possessions, and a holding penalty on Lackawanna College looked like it might become six straight, until Brown lofted a deep pass on third-and-14 from his own 12 to midfield, where Alphonso Foray made the grab and raced to the Sussex three-yard line, before he was grabbed from behind. X'Zavion Evans would cash in a few plays later, and the Falcons led 14-0 early in the second quarter.

The Falcons would add another touchdown later in the second quarter when Barry Brown found Jasiah Purdie on a three-yard pass to make it 21-0 with just over four minutes to play, capping off a 14-play drive for Lackawanna College.

After a failed fourth down attempt from the Skylanders, the Falcons had the ball at the Sussex 43-yard line with 2:11 to go in the first half, but threw an interception on second down, which was returned to the Lackawanna 40-yard line with 1:59 to play in the half. Sussex, aided by 15-yard penalty against Lackawanna, and a 14-yard pass, had their best shot with first-and-goal at the Lackawanna eight-yard line with under a minute to play. But a second down run from quarterback Connor Lake was stopped short when Lake tried to rush to his right, then cut up the field, where Avanti Lockhart knocked the ball free, and William Hackett recovered it for the Falcons, ending the scoring threat. Lackawanna would take a 21-0 lead into the half.

After a quick three-and-out from the Skylanders opened the third quarter, the Falcons would put together a seven-play, 56-yard drive that ended in a touchdown pass from Antwan Squire to Barry Brown, making it 28-0 with just over nine minutes to go in the third quarter.

Sussex would go three-and-out again, and Hackett would make another play, this time getting his hand on the punt after shooting through the gap, which forced a wobbly punt to be downed at the Sussex 25-yard line. The Falcons would turn that into points in just a few minutes, when Isaiah Edwards capped off the short-drive with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 35-0 at the six-minute mark in the third quarter.

Hackett would find himself involved in another play on defense, after linebacker Jahman McNeil forced a fumble on a run by Sussex on the ensuing possession, and Hackett pounced on the loss ball. The Falcons, despite the short field, couldn't capitalize and turned the ball over on downs.

After forcing another punt, the Falcons scored on their next possession when Brayden Hawkins found Jawon Hall for a 62-yard strike, making it 42-0 right at the end of the third quarter, and giving Hawkins his first touchdown pass of the season.

Lackawanna College would score again in the fourth quarter, when Brayden Hawkins found Colbie Young from 27-yards out for his team-high seventh touchdown reception, making it 49-0 with 10:23 to play.

Another Sussex fumble would lead to a Falcon field goal drive that ended with a 29-yard Cameron Ceccotti field goal, making the score 52-0 with 3:29 to go. A subsequent Sussex County drive would stall at their own 40, and that's where the game clock would run out.

Jawon Hall had four catches to lead all receivers, all coming in the second half, and totaled 100 yards receiving and a touchdown. Alphonso Foray had three catches and a team-high 104 yards, including a game-high 85-yard catch. Colbie Young added three catches for 61 yards and another score, while Delvin Palmer had two catches for 50 yards and a touchdown.

Antwan Squire led the way rushing the football, going for 62 yards on eleven carries, while Isaiah Edwards ran for 48 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Ja'Quai Bishop saw nine carries for 39 yards.

Avanti Lockhart led the Falcon defense with 5 total tackles, all solo, and a forced fumble. William Hackett finished with a pair of tackles, including a tackle-for-loss, a tipped punt, and two fumble recoveries. Dewayne Grantham had five total tackles, four solo, and a tackle for loss. Isaiah Oduro led Lackawanna College with 2 tackles-for-loss, and the Falcons had six total for the game.

With the win, Lackawanna College improves to 5-2 on the season, and wins their second straight game in a row. The Falcons still have three games remaining in the 2021 season, all on the road, and it all starts next weekend, when Lackawanna College travels to Ephraim, Utah to take on the #5 Snow College Badgers. The game is on Saturday, November 6th and is set for a 3:00pm kickoff. Snow College will be streaming the game live on their YouTube channel.
