BASE: Sloppy Falcons Fall At #20 Brunswick In Season Opener

Lackawanna Committed Eight Errors And Struggled To Get The Bats On Track To Start 2026

2/7/26

SUPPLY, NC – A mistake-filled afternoon was not quite what Lackawanna College baseball had hoped for to start the 2026 campaign, but the Falcons were feeling generous, giving out eight errors in a 22-5 loss on the road at DII #20 Brunswick CC on Saturday afternoon in North Carolina.

The Falcons (0-1) managed just four hits, while the Dolphins (1-0) had 17, including eight extra-base knocks, while scoring runs in every inning they batted. Lackawanna had its chances, stranding ten runners on the day, but the Falcons just couldn't stay out of their own way.

After stranding a pair of baserunners to start the game, Lackawanna took the field for the first time since the fall. The rust showed, as a walk and then a stolen base, coupled with an error, put the leadoff runner at third. Lackawanna got the runner out on a fielder's choice, then another put a runner at second with two down, but a second error, this time on the corner infield, led to a run scoring to make it 1-0, Dolphins, after an inning of play.

The Falcons put two on with nobody out, and then loaded the bases with two down in the top of the second, but couldn't capitalize, and Brunswick took advantage, using a pair of doubles to plate another run in the bottom half of the second. An error, followed by a wild pitch, let a runner score, and then another wild pitch, followed by an RBI single, made it 4-0, Brunswick.

Two more errors let a run score in the bottom of the third, and then Brunswick made it a nine-run lead with a solo homer, a two-run triple, and a single in the fourth.

Lackawanna scored its first run of the season thanks to a wild pitch, with Julian Abreu (Philadelphia, PA) scampering home on the errant toss. Later, Hunter Austra (Larksville, PA) singled in the second run, followed by another wild pitch letting the Falcons get within 9-3 after 4.5 innings.

Brunswick scored to get to ten, but the Falcons added two more through a Jose Soquiel (Hazleton, PA) RBI single, plus a run-scoring ground out from Mark Zuppo (Garnet Valley, PA), making it 10-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Dolphins would hit the accelerator from there, using a bases-loaded single to score a pair in the bottom frame, then scoring six in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a bases-clearing double. Brunswick added four more in the eighth inning, using another RBI double to make it 22-5 heading into the ninth, where the Falcons would go quietly.

The Falcons drew nine walks but struck out 15 times and managed just four hits. Soquiel was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk, while Kolton Haifley (New Oxford, PA), Jimmy Ernst (Franklin Square, NY), and Austra all had hits. Zuppo had two walks and an RBI, while Abreu had two walks and two runs scored. Lefty Makai Day (South Williamsport, PA) was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs, just two earned, in three innings of action.

Lackawanna is right back to action on Sunday, February 8th, with a doubleheader at Brunswick CC. First pitch of game one is set for an 11:00am ET start at Brunswick.
