SCRANTON, Pa. – The mystery is over, and now the work and the countdown can really begin.
On Tuesday afternoon, the NJCAA released the bracket for the 12-team Division II World Series happening this weekend on Enid, Oklahoma, and the Lackawanna College baseball team, somewhere in the Midwest on a bus, found out that it will be the lowest seed in the field. The Falcons, champions of the East District, will take on #5 Madison College, the Midwest District champions out of Wisconsin.
The Falcons (34-16) will face off with the Wolfpack (43-9) on Saturday, May 24
th, at 5:00pm ET (4:00pm CT) at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid. It will be the third of four games scheduled on the opening day of the tournament. The winner will play #4 Heartland CC on Sunday, May 25
th, while the loser will play an elimination game on Memorial Day.
Lackawanna earned its way to the dance by winning six straight playoff games and eleven of its last 12 coming into the weekend. The Falcons won three games in enemy territory to win the Region XIX DII championship, including beating host Mercer County CC twice. Those wins helped set up the Falcons for hosting duties for the East District tournament, where they again went 3-0, battling back from down 14-0 early to SUNY Rockland CC in game one to win 23-17 and then go on to capture the district championship.
The Wolfpack have been consistently excellent over the years, and this is their seventh straight appearance in the NJCAA Division II World Series. Madison has made the national championship series in 2022, falling to Pearl River CC in three games. The Wolfpack fell to LSU Eunice in 2013 in the semi-final round. Madison has been a mainstay in Enid, consistently winning its region and district to get itself to the Sooner State. Head coach Mike Davenport has been the mentor for the Wolfpack since 2005, winning 804 games in his 21 years in charge of the Wolfpack. This year, Davenport's Wolfpack has put together several winning streaks, including a season-best 16 games in a row, and eleven straight games entering the tournament weekend.
Lackawanna College and Madison have not played each other, so this match-up will be a first for both teams on the big stage.
