SYRACUSE, NY – Lackawanna College softball did everything right in game one, then had everything go wrong in game two, forcing a doubleheader split on the road at SUNY Onondaga CC on Friday afternoon in the Empire State. Lackawanna won 16-3 in five innings for game one, then fell 11-9 in game two.
Â
The Falcons (21-21) were dominant from the start in game one, scoring eight runs right out of the gate and putting up runs in four of the five innings played. Lackawanna had 16 runs on 14 hits, posting two doubles and two triples and getting a ton of production from the top of the lineup, including 3-for-4 performances from both
Emmalee Mowery (Mechanicsburg, PA) and
Kailsyn Currie (Gibbons, AB), who each had four RBIs.
Isabella Rodriguez (Lancaster, PA) was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while
Kizbelth Ortiz (New Britain, CT) was 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs.
Jillian Heimberger (Unionville, PA) earned the win, giving up three unearned runs in four innings, striking out three.
Â
Mowery singled to start the game, and scored when Currie tripled her home to get the Falcons ahead 1-0 just two batters in. An error let Heimberger on and Currie scored, then a bases-loaded single from
Mia Scalese (Moscow, PA) made it 3-0, Falcons. A sac fly scored a fourth run, then an Ortiz single made it 5-0, Falcons. Rodriguez scored a pair of runs on a single to left, and Mowery doubled to left to make it 8-0, Falcons in the first.
Â
Things were quiet until the top of the third. The Falcons lengthened their lead to 11-0 thanks to a two-run single from Mowery and a one-run double from Currie. They added four more, courtesy of an Ortiz single, a bases-loaded walk, and a two-run single from Currie.
Â
Onondaga (5-8) broke through in the fourth, scoring three runs with two outs, spurred on by an error on the infield with two down that let the inning continue. An error let one run score, a fielder's choice scored a second, and a double steal scored one more to make it 15-3.
Â
Lackawanna added one more run in the fifth when
Abigail Yenalevitch (Kingston, PA) tripled with one out, scoring a run to push the Falcons' lead out to 16-3. Lackawanna pitched around a one-out double to win game one in five innings via run rule.
Â
Game two was much tighter, but the difference was a five-error top of the seventh inning, which let six runs score and completely flipped the game on its head. Lackawanna, who was the home team on the board in game two, scored a run with two outs in the seventh, but couldn't overcome the eight total errors to make the comeback. Mowery was 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, hitting a pair of doubles and crossing the 100-hit mark for her career.
Lindsey Tasker (Clarks Summit, PA) was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Currie was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Yenalevitch pitched well in relief, but she was hard done by the errors, giving up seven unearned runs in three innings.
Â
Onondaga pounced early, using a leadoff triple and then a walk to set up a double steal that made it 1-0. Starter
Mekenzie Dineen (Wilmington, DE) got herself out of trouble with a fly out, a line out, and then a pickoff play at third to keep the damage to a minimum.
Â
Lackawanna stranded two in the bottom half, which Onondaga took advantage of to score on an error on the infield with two outs in the top of the second, making it 2-0, Lazers. Lackawanna answered in the bottom half, as Dineen doubled with one out and scored on a Tasker single, then Mowery doubled to center to score Tasker and tie things at 2-2 after two.
Â
Dineen stranded a pair in the third, but the Falcons were retired in order in the bottom frame.
Â
In the fourth, back-to-back singles put two on, then a double to left scored the pair to push Onondaga in front, 4-2. With one out and the bases loaded, Dineen managed to strike out the next batter and then induced a fly out to right field to strand all three runners.
Â
Lackawanna bounced back in the bottom of the fifth. Mowery doubled to lead things off, then scored on a single from Currie to make it 4-3. Currie then scored when Heimberger tripled to right, tying the game at 4-4.
Laniah Tasker (Chambersburg, PA) sac flied to left for the inning's first out, but that scored Heimberger and gave the Falcons a 5-4 lead, their first of game two, heading into the sixth.
Â
Onondaga got a batter on with an error on the infield, and that runner eventually scored on a sac fly to center to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the bottom half. Lackawanna scored three more in the bottom frame, using a sac fly from Currie and a two-run error from Heimberger to make it 8-5 Falcons heading into the seventh.
Â
A single and a walk started the inning for the Lazers, putting two on with nobody out. Two straight errors on the infield led to a run scoring to make it 8-6. A sac fly cut the Lackawanna lead to 8-7, then another error tied the game at 8-8. With one out, an error at second let the go-ahead run score, and an error at short let the fifth run of the inning score to make it 10-8, Lazers. A single to right scored the eleventh run of the game, and left Lackawanna with work to do in the bottom half.
Lindsey Tasker tripled, and Mowery singled her home with two outs to make it 11-9, but a strikeout ended the potential rally.
Â
Lackawanna College has to get back to action on Saturday, April 19
th, as the Falcons are set to host Delaware Tech CC for a Region XIX DII doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:00pm ET, but the Falcons will celebrate their sophomores beforehand with a ceremony recognizing the seven Falcon student-athletes.
