CUMBERLAND, Md. – The offense was relentless, and the Lackawanna College softball team kept its streak alive, taking a pair of games on Friday afternoon on the road against Allegany College of Maryland. The Falcons won game one 9-2, then took game two by an 18-6 score in six innings.
Â
The Falcons (20-7) had slow starts in both games, slowly bringing the offense to a boil before exploding in the latter stages. In the first game, the Trojans (4-10) led Lackawanna 2-1 through four innings of work, but the visitors scored four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to turn the game around and pull well-ahead for the eventual win. The four-run fifth was highlighted by a two-run triple from
Mazzie Musgrave (First Year; Old Forge, PA) to break open a 2-2 game. Musgrave apparently liked it so much that she did it again, hitting another two-run triple in the sixth, then scoring on a passed ball to stretch the Falcon advantage to 9-2.
Â
Musgrave finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI on her pair of triples, while
Allyson Lemerise (Sophomore; Catonsville, MD) went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, and
Emilee Dickinson (Sophomore; Hillsboro, OR) went 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
Aria Reyes (Sophomore; Allentown, PA) got the win, her fifth of the year, allowing two runs, neither earned, on seven hits and striking out five in seven innings of work.
Â
Game two was another one that was tight through the first two innings, with the Falcons holding a slim 4-3 lead, but Lackawanna's offense once again kept the pressure up, amassing 22 hits for the game, including ten extra-base knocks, to slug past Allegany with 18 runs.
Â
Leading 4-3 in the third, the Falcons, who scored runs in every inning, lengthened the lead thanks to a clutch double from
Alexis Semanek (Sophomore; Wilkes-Barre, PA), followed by a sac fly from
Jillian Heimberger (First Year; Unionville, PA). Then, in the fourth, Lemerise pushed the lead out to 8-3 thanks to a two-run homer to left field.
Â
The Lackawanna lead was cut to 9-6 after the fifth inning, thanks to back-to-back doubles from the Trojans in the bottom half, but the Falcons erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning. An error, followed by six straight hits resulted in six runs, and the Falcons tacked on three more before the top of the sixth ended. Despite two singles in the top of the seventh, the Falcons retired the side to end the game early via run-rule.
Â
Lackawanna had eight different players with multiple hits. Musgrave was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Lemerise was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Skylar Borthwick (Sophomore; Pittston, PA) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, and
Morgan McVicar (First Year; Blakely, PA) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Semanek and Heimberger each had two hits and each had three RBI.
Brianna Dinice (First Year; Terryville, CT) picked up the win, her fifth of the season, allowing six runs on eleven hits in five innings, while striking out five.
Â
With the doubleheader victory, the Falcons now run their winning streak to 12 games. They'll have a shot to lengthen it further on Saturday, March 30
th, when Lackawanna hosts Monroe College for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 12:00pm ET at Scranton HS Softball Field. Â
