WSOC: Sussex Soars Past Lackawanna In Region Opener

The Skylanders Were Dominant Throughout Their Victory Over The Falcons In Dunmore

9/3/25

DUNMORE, Pa. – For the first half hour of its game on Wednesday afternoon, Lackawanna College women's soccer held its own with Sussex County CC. The pressure, however, eventually got to the young Falcons, as the Skylanders zoomed past with a 10-1 win at Schautz Stadium in Dunmore in the Region XIX Division II opener for both teams.

The Falcons (0-1-0) led in the 29th minute through a breakaway goal from Melanie Shumway (Rome, PA). Cyrah Bihler (Hamlin, PA) cleared a ball out of the back, and Sussex misplayed it at midfield. Shumway pounced on the loose ball, sprinting forward and latching on. Shumway outran three defenders and beat the keeper low for her first goal of the season, putting Lackawanna ahead.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, that only served to wake up the Skylanders (2-0-0). Sussex had dominated possession to that point, and now turned up the pressure even more, scoring four goals in the final eight minutes of play to take a 4-1 lead at the break.

Sussex kept rolling in the second, scoring 30 seconds into the 46th minute on the restart, then scoring again in the 51st, the 63rd, the 65th, and the 67th minutes. The Skylanders were able to end the game early via goal-differential with an 8+ goal advantage after 70 minutes.

The Skylanders outshot the Falcons 20-3, putting 16 on target. Bihler had the only other Lackawanna shot on target, coming on a free kick early in the contest. Elizabeth DePrimo (Dunmore, PA) had six saves on the afternoon, coming up with some big ones early in the first half to help Lackawanna keep its head above water.

Lackawanna College gets back to action in just a few days, as the Falcons will take a trip to Rochester, NY to take on Monroe CC on Saturday, September 6th. Kickoff is set for 2:00pm ET, and the game will be the second of a doubleheader, with the men's teams playing first at 12:00pm ET.
