SCRANTON, Pa. -- Lackawanna men's soccer team took a quick lead before falling in a Region XIX match to the Bears of Harcum College, 6-1, Monday afternoon at the Proving Grounds.
For Lackawanna (2-9-0, 1-3-0 Region XIX) the loss was the sixth of the season to an opponent whose received votes or been ranked in the top-20 nationally in 2018.
For Harcum (7-2-1, 2-1-0 Region XIX) the win was the third time this season by a five goal margin.
The visiting Falcons jumped into the lead in the 8th minute when Montell James (Roseau, Dominica) tucked away a Jacquan McPherson (Penns Grove, N.J.) throw in. For James the goal marked his fifth match in the last six, with at least a goal or assist. The Dominica youth international has scored and/or assisted in 8-of-11 matches this year and leads Lackawanna in goals (5), assists (6) and points (16).
The Bears leveled the match off a corner in the 20th minute courtesy of Dan Roth. Thomas Roberts found Archie Sewell for a 1v1 against Vincent Whitmore, (Reading, Pa.) taking a 2-1 lead in the 34th minute.
The first half ended with Harcum holding the 2-1 lead on the scoreboard while also holding a 7-4 lead in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The second half belonged to the hosts as Harcum netted three goals in four minutes (65th, 67th, 68th) before adding the final in the 75th to move within one win of tying its eight wins in 2017.
Whitmore made a career-high 10 saves in the loss for Lackawanna College. Carter Stuck made one save in the first half to earn the win before Gaige Laine came in to make one save in the second half for Harcum.
The Falcons continue their challenging schedule when they return to Scranton to host the number 5 NJCAA Division III Coaches Poll ranked Cougars of Camden County College at the University of Scranton's Fitzpatrick Field. The non-region match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
