(Vineland, NJ) – The Lackawanna Falcons played their last games of the 2019 regular season on Saturday against NJCAA DIII #1 Cumberland County College. They lost game one 9-8 and won game two 10-2. Their record now stands at 27-14 (7-3). The next stop for the Falcons will be the NJCAA Region XIX Baseball Tournament next weekend.
Lackawanna inched ahead by 2 runs early in the top of the 1st. Colin Weinert hit a double against the fence in center field to drive in 2 runs. Unfortunately, Lackawanna gave up 5 runs during the same inning, 4 of which came via a grand slam. The Falcons would bring the game within 1 run when they scored in the top of the 4th. Ian Diaz and Matt Clarke hit back to back homeruns to center field to make the game 5-4. Cumberland answered back with 2 runs of their own to keep the Falcons at an arm's length. The next inning, David Williams hit a solo homerun but Cumberland hit one of their own and an RBI double. Lackawanna attempted a comeback in the top of the 7th by scoring 3 runs. Ryan Cole singled home a run, Ian Diaz drew a bases loaded walk, and Matt Clarke did the same. Cumberland defeated Lackawanna 9-8. The losing pitcher was Nathan McLain. He did not record an out and gave up 3 hits and 5 earned runs.
Colin Weinert: 3-3, 1 Double, 2 RBI
The second game saw strong defense from the Falcons as they only allowed 2 runs to cross the plate. Lackawanna kicked off the 1st inning with 2 runs; Thylar Summarell hit an RBI double to right and David Williams smacked an RBI single up the gap. Cumberland scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd but this time it was Lackawanna's turn to return the favor. Ryan Cole hit an RBI double to left-center and then got himself home on an error. Ian Diaz homered the next inning to make the score 5-1. That homer was the second of the day for Diaz. Zac Granger recorded 2 RBI's when he hit a single up the center of the field in the 6th inning. The Falcons won 10-2. The winning pitcher was Grant Powell. He pitched 5 innings, and gave up 4 hits and 1 earned run. He also tossed 6 strikeouts.
