Lackawanna Sweeps Conference Doubleheader

Pemberton NJ – Saturday afternoon, the Lackawanna College Baseball team improved their conference win/loss record to 9-3 with a doubleheader sweep of Rowan College at Burlington County. The Falcons won game one 4-0 on a Nate McLain complete game shutout and the nightcap 2-0 on a combined shutout by Grant Powell and Dominic Verrastro.

Game One Summary: The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Zac Granger RBI single. Although they scored one more run in the fourth on a Jerry Reinhart sacrifice fly and two more in the fifth on RBI singles by Granger and Thylar Summarell, they would find that those runs were only a buffer as Nate McLain shutout the Barons with a sterling pitching performance. McLain pitched a complete seven inning game giving up only three hits while striking out eight.

Lackawanna batters had seven hits in the opener, two singles each by Zac Granger and Ryan Cole. The remaining base hits were contributed by Thylar Summarell, Colin Weinert and Jerry Rein with one each.

Game Two Summary: The nightcap was a pitcher's battle. Grant Powell and Dominic Verrastro combined to hold RCBC to no runs over seven innings relinquishing only three hits while striking out 11 Barron hitters. Powell was the starting pitcher, hurling the first five innings giving up the three hits and striking out six. Verrastro pitched the final two innings holding Burlington hitless and scoreless while striking out five. Powell was credited with the win when the Falcons scored in the top of fifth, while Verrastro recorded a save.

RCBC held Lackawanna to four hits. However, the Falcons utilized those hits more effectively then the Barrons. In the fifth, Jerry Reinhart led the inning off with a double and scored on an Owen Kiess double latter in the inning. In the sixth, Reinhart again led off the inning with a double and scored when Kiess drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center. Lackawanna's only other base hit was single by Thylar Summarell.

Lackawanna is scheduled to play its next game tomorrow when they host Monroe Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM
