Scranton, PA- Alexandra Jackson scored 6 of her 32 points from the foul line with under one minute left in double overtime, to lead the Lackawanna College women's basketball team to a 76-68 win over Manor College.
It was a roller coaster contest for the Lady Falcons. In the first half they fell behind Manor by a 16-4 score in the opening minutes of the game. Lackawanna overcame that deficit and took a 32-27 lead into halftime. In the Second half they saw Manor tie the score at 57 with 2 seconds left in regulation. The Falcons almost claimed victory in regulation when a half-court shot by Paris Thompson at the buzzer banked off the backboard and fell off the front of the basket. In the first over time, Manor took a 64-62 lead with 4 seconds left in the overtime period. After a Manor timeout, Tearia Hartley stole an in-bounds pass at half court and drove to the basket to score a game tying two point layup as time ran out in the period. Lackawanna took control in the second overtime, outscoring the Blue Jays 12-4 to claim the 76-68 win.
In addition to Jackson, both Ariana Sanders and Ciani Ballard scored in double figures for the Falcons. Sanders's double digit point total came at the front end of a 12 point, 20 rebound double-double; she also led the team in steals with 4. Ballard contributed 10, while leading the team in assists with 5.
If early season wins can be considered crucial, this week's wins against Union County College and Manor fall into that category. Both wins were home victories against teams that played each other for the Region XIX title last season and are always in contention for the for the top seeds in the Region standings.
The Falcons play a third important Region XIX contest this coming week when they travel to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania to take on the Bears of Harcum College. That contest is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Tuesday.
