Scranton, PA – This Saturday, the Lackawanna College women's basketball team travels to Randolph, New Jersey, to play in play in the semi-finals of Region XIX Division II Women's Basketball Tournament. The Lady Falcons opponent will be Union County College. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 PM and will be played at County College of Morris; the host of this year's tournament.
Saturday's semi-final matchup was the result of a three way tie between the Lady Falcons, Union and Harcum College. Since those three had identical head to head records against each other, the top three bracket positions had to be determined by the use of a three way coin toss. The results of that procedure gave Harcum the top seed, Union the second, and Lackawanna the third. With five teams qualifying for the tourney Manor College and Rowan College at Burlington County will play for the final seed on Thursday night. The final four bracket was thus set, Harcum, as top seed, plays the winner of the quarter final game in one semi-final and the Lackawanna plays Union in the other..
Both Lackawanna and Union enter the tournament with identical Region XIX win/loss records of 14-2, while splitting their Region matchups. Union won the December 15 contest 87-76 in overtime, while Lackawanna the January game by a 66-61 score. Union has an overall record of 21-5, while Lackawanna is 18-6.
Saturday's game has added importance to both teams, since the winner will not only have an opportunity move on to the Region title game, but it also guarantees them a spot in the NJCAA District N/O playoffs, were a win guarantees a spot in the National Tournament.
