Former Lady Falcon's Standout Brittany Nelson and the California University of Pennsylvania Women's Basketball Team have captured the NCAA DII Atlantic Regional Championship and advanced to the Elite Eight for the fifth time in school history. Cal advanced by beating Bloomsburg University 72-69 on March 16th.The Vulcans will now face Nova Southeastern in the Elite Eight on March 24 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Nelson has seen action in 18 games this past season, a much different situation than last year when she was Lady Falcon's leading scorer and rebounder. However Nelson knows and embraces the role she has been given this year. "This year it is my job to make my teammates better by working hard at practice and to be vocal on the bench game in and game out. My job is to keep my teammates focused and keep their spirts up during each game" Nelson said. Spirit is something the Vulcans needed a lot of this past year. On January 18th Nelson and Cal U faced one of the hardest challenges of the season when senior forward Shanice Clark passed in her sleep while suffering from a rare blood disorder called sickle cell trait. "She was an inspiration to me and really helped my transition from life at Lackawanna to life at Cal. Every day is a constant reminder of her. As a result of her death, my teammates have become a sisterhood fighting to claim the National Championship because we knew how badly Shanice wanted it."
As a result of their efforts to overcome this tragedy by uniting in a team effort to claim a common goal, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team has been nominated for the Russell Athletic "Together We R" Team Award.
