Lady Falcons Rally to Claim Key Conference Victory

Scranton, PA: With 5:49 left in the contest and the Lady Falcons down to Union Community College by fourteen (14) points (68-54), it looked as though the Lackawanna Women's Basketball team was going to suffer it first 2014 loss in Region XIX Division II play. Not wanting to see a blemish on their undefeated conference record, the Falcons went on a 23-11 run to tie the score in regulation at 77-77. Lackawanna held their own in the first overtime as each team scored 11 to tie the score at 88-88. In the second overtime it was all Lady Falcons as Union scored the first two points of the second extra period, only to see Lackawanna score the next 11 points for a 99-90 win. The victory gives the Falcons their 6th conference win without a loss and the number one position in the Region XIX Division II standings.

Kayla Henderson was Lackawanna's top performer sinking 32 points, 17 of which came during the Falcon's game tying run and the two overtimes. Kwanza Murray contributed to the victory with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Other key performances were put in by Darrian Johnson with 19 points and Melvene Gainey with 14 rebounds. Henderson led the team in assists with 5, while Murray led in steals with 4.

In a side note to this contest, Henderson entered the game as the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week after her 20 point, 10 rebound effort against Mercer County Community College in Lackawanna's last game before the Thanksgiving break.

Lackawanna will get a seven day rest before they take the court once more. Next Tuesday, the Falcons travel to Newark, New Jersey, to play Essex County College, the only team that a Joya Whittington coached team not been able to beat. Game time for that contest is 5:00 PM.
