Blue Bell, PA – Thursday afternoon, the Lackawanna College Softball team swept Montgomery County Community College in a non-conference doubleheader. The Falcons outscored the Mustangs in each game by scores of 15-4 and 16-2.
In game one, Kacey Orlowski led the Falcons to their win with performances both at the plate and on the mound. At the plate, she had a perfect day with three singles in three at bats with two runs scored and an RBI. On the mound, Orlowski earned the win by holding MCCC to two runs on a solo hit over three innings of work in a run shortened game. In those three innings she struck out five Lady Mustangs.
The Falcons totaled sixteen hits in the first game of the twin-bill with five Falcons having multi-hit contests. Besides Orlowski, four other Lackawanna batters had at least two hits. That group included Colleen Cwalina, Shea Petty, Alexandria Thoman and Vanessa Wolf. Cwalina was the most productive hitter of the four. She doubled twice in four plate appearances with two runs scored and four runs driven in. Thoman drove in three runs with two singles in two official visits to the plate. Petty drove in two runs and scored with two singles in four plate appearances. While, Wolf had two singles in three at bats with three runs scored and an RBI. Marina Pegula had Lackawanna's only other extra base hit, a double in the the third.
Orlowski's mound win gave her a win loss record of 5-5 for the 2018 season.
In game two, Alexandria Thoman was the Lackawanna's top performer in the Falcons 16-2 five inning win. Thoman singled twice and doubled twice in her flawless four for four game. She scored three times and drove in six more runs.
The Falcons tallied twenty-one hits in the nightcap with each batter in the Lackawanna lineup contributing at least one hit. Eight of those twenty-one hits were for extra bases.
Besides Thoman's four hit game, four other Falcon batters had multi-hit games. Amanda Varaksa had four singles in a perfect four for four game. Varaksa also scored each time she reached base. Paige Durkin singled and doubled, scored a run and drove in a run in her four plate appearances. Marina Pegula also singled and double in four trips to the plate, while scoring twice. Brenda Reninga scored three times and drove in a run with a double and triple in three official at bats. Lauryn Rodriguez and Vanessa Wolf had Lackawanna's other two extra base hits. Rodriguez contributed a two-run double in the third, while Wolf tripled and scored in the second.
Katelyn Weller earned her third win of the year without a loss, by holding Montgomery to two runs on five hits over five innings of work. She struck out six.
Lackawanna will next play on Saturday, when they host Delaware Technical Community College at Sherwood Park in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, in a Region XIX DII doubleheader. Saturday's twin-bill will start at 11:00 AM.
