Jessup, PA – Friday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team had their season come to an end with a loss in the final game of the National Junior College Athletic Association's District K playoffs. The Falcons were outscored by Mercyhurst North East 7-3 in the District's championship game.
The Saints took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Lei Guthrie scored on a fielder's choice and Kaylee Brooks' two run homer. In the bottom of the same inning Lackawanna cut into that lead with Kacey Orlowski's two run homer. In the top of the third Mercyhurst saw their lead increase to 4-2 on a solo homer by Ashlyn Slusher, only to see the Falcons again draw within a run of tying the score when Sierra Mulgrew slamed a solo homer in the bottom of the same inning. Neither team scored in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, Mercyhurst increased their lead to 7-3 on Guthrie's three run homer. Those three runs would be the last scores in the contest, as the Saints survived the final two and a half innings to claim the District K title.
Barbara Verrastro suffered the loss after hurling three innings while relinquishing four runs on six hits. Verrastro finishes the season with a win/loss record of 13-8. Kacey Orlowski pitched in relief of Verrastro and gave up three on three hits over four innings. She struck out four Saints.
At the plate the Lady Falcons were held to six hits. Moriah Lynn and Paige Durkin contributed four of those hits. Lynn singled and doubled in four at bats, while Durkin singled twice in three plate appearances. The remaining two hits were Orlowski's two run homer and Mulgrew's solo slam.
The Falcons finished the season with an overall win loss record of 24-14.and the Region XIX DII Championship
