Lady Falcons lose heart-breaker in Game Two of District K Series

Scranton, PA – Monday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team suffered an extra inning loss to Mercyhurst North East in Game two of the District K playoff series. Lackawanna fell by an 8-5 score in the ninth inning of the back and fourth game. The final game of the best of three series was postponed to Friday and will be played at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, New York.

Lackawanna scored first in game two on a solo home run in the top of the third by Ashley Rzesewski. Mercyhurst answered in the bottom of the third with a triple by Mackenzie Hawley and a single by Kaelyn Shea. The Falcons retook the lead in the top of the forth when they loaded the bases on a Barbara Verrastro single, a Sierra Mulgrew walk and a Mercyhurst error allowing Lauren Leppo to reach first. Kacey Orlowski drove in the one run on a fielder's choice. Paige Durkin followed with a single to drive in two more runs to give Lackawanna a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Saints put a dent in the Falcons' lead, when Heather Mueller hit a solo home run to make the score 4-2. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the seventh, when a Lackawanna error led to lead off base runner. A single by Shea moved that runner to third, and a two out triple by Ashlyn Slusher tied the game. Neither team scored again until the ninth, when Durkin led off the top of the inning with a single. Kaelyn Slangan, pinch running for Durkin, was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and passed ball; and then scored on a two out Mercyhurst error. In the bottom of the inning, the Saints loaded the bases with two outs on a fielder's choice, a Slusher single and Lackawanna error before claiming the victory on a Hannah Larkin walk off grand slam home run.

Lackawanna's Verrastro suffered the loss after pitching one and two thirds innings in relief of Orlowski. It was her seventh loss of the year against thirteen wins. Orlowski pitched the initial seven innings relinquishing four runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out three. Lei Guthrie was the Saint's winning pitcher.

At the plate, Lackawanna had eight hits. Verrastro had two singles in five at bats, while, Durkin had two singles and two RBI's in four plate appearances. Two of the other four hits went for extra bases, a double by Orlowski and the solo homer by Rzesewski. The remaining two hits were singles by Brenda Reninga and Marina Pegula.

The starting time for Friday's game is yet to be agreed determined.
