Dunmore, Pa. – Friday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team split a Region XIX Division II doubleheader with conference rival, Rowan College at Burlington County. The Falcons lost the opener in a pitcher's battle by a 1-0 score. They rebounded in the nightcap to beat the Lady Barons 8-2.
In the opener, Kacey Orlowski was credited with the loss, despite a superb pitching performance, where she hurled seven innings, held RCBC to one run on four hits and struck out five. The Lackawanna hitters where limited to three hits; a single and double by Moriah Lynn in three at bats, and a double by Marina Pegula in three plate performances.
In the second game of the doubleheader, RCBC scored in the top of first to take a 1-0 lead. However, unlike Game One, that run would not be enough for the Lady Barons, as Lackawanna scored six runs over their first two innings to cruise to a 8-2 victory.
Barbara Verrastro claimed the victory, by hurling seven innings, relinquishing one run on four hits and striking out five runs.
At the plate, Verrastro supported her cause by having a perfect three for three day, where she singled twice and doubled, scored a run and drove in three more. Marina Pegula also had a multi-hit day as she singled and doubled with an RBI in three plate appearances. She scored three times. Sierra Mulgrew added a double and 3 RBIs
Lackawanna plays its second consecutive conference tomorrow, when it travels to Randolph. New Jersey to play County Collegfe of Morris. That twin-bill starts at 12:00 PM.
