Lackawanna falls twice to Vikings

Dunmore, PA - Sunday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team dropped both games of their Region XIX Division II doubleheader to the Vikings of Mercer County Community College. The Falcons were outscored 11-2 in the opener and fell by a 9-4 score in the nightcap.

In game one, Barbara Verrastro took the loss, after giving up eight runs over five innings.

Although the Lady Falcons made good contact at the plate in that contest, they could only contribute a total of six hits to the cause, as well struck balls were hit directly at Viking defenders. Of those six hits, four were recorded by Marina Pegula and Moriah Lynn. Pegula doubled and tripled in two plate appearances, while scoring both of the Falcons' runs. Lynn singled and doubled in her three visits to the plate, while driving in each of the Lackawanna runs.

In the nightcap, the Lady Falcons scored the first four runs of the ballgame in the bottom of the first inning; only to see that lead evaporate in the top of the second when Mercer pushed five runs across the plate. Although each team threatened during the next three innings, neither team scored. In the top of the sixth, the Lady Vikings scored a solo run and contributed three more in the top of the seventh to assure them the win over Lackawanna.

Kacey Orlowski suffered the loss for the Falcons, giving up nine runs, only one of which was earned, over seven innings.

Lackawanna hitters recorded nine hits with three Lady Falcons contributing six of those base hits.  Orlowski singled twice in four at-bats, while scoring once and driving in a run. Brenda Reninga and Laureen Leppo also had two singles in four trips to the plate with Leppo also recording an RBI. Both Marina Pegula and Sierra Mulgrew had extra base hits for the Falcons. Each doubled, drove in a run and scored a run.

Lackawanna plays again on Tuesday when they host Lehigh Carbon Community College at Sherwood Park in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
