Lincroft, NJ – Monday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball dropped a doubleheader to Brookdale Community College, the #3 team in the most recent NJCAA DIII poll. In the opener, the Lady Falcons were shut out 3-0, before losing to the Brookdale 7-6 in extra innings in the nightcap.
In the first game of the twin-bill, Barbara Verrastro suffered the loss, despite a superb pitching performance in which she threw six innings, relinquishing five hits and three runs, only two of which were earned. Disappointingly, the Falcon hitters could not give Verrastro scoring support as they held Lackawanna batters to two hits, singles by both Moriah Lynn and Brenda Reninga.
In game two, Brookdale took an early 4-0 lead, scoring one in the first and second inning and two more in the third. The Falcons put a dent in that lead with a run in the fourth, only to see Brookdale reply with a run in the fifth. Lackawanna tied the game at five-all in the sixth when they pushed four runs across the plate. Unfortunately, Brookdale scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to claim the win.
Kacey Orlowski suffered the loss, pitching seven and two thirds inning, while relinquishing seven runs on twelve hits, six of which were earned. At the plate, the Falcons' batters had ten hits with eighth of those contributed by four hitters. Lauren Leppo singled twice in four at bats, while Moriah Lynn and Orlowski both singled twice and drove in a run in four plate appearances. Sierra Mulgrew had Lackawanna's only extra base hit, a double, to go along with a single and RBI in her four visits to the plate.
Lackawanna's twin bill against PSU – Hazelton, scheduled for tomorrow, has been cancelled and will not rescheduled.
Pending the weather, the Falcons next scheduled game is Wednesday when they travel to Randolph, New Jersey, to play County College of Morris in a Region XIX Division II doubleheader. First pitch for the opening game of that doubleheader is 3:00 PM.
