Corning, NY – After a week of rain, the Lackawanna College softball team was finally able to get back onto the diamond Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against Corning Community College. Regrettably for the Lady Falcons, they fell in both games of that twin-bill by scores of 10-1 and 11-9.
In the opener, Barbara Verrastro suffered the loss after giving up ten runs, only five of which were earned, over four innings. At the plate, the Lady Falcons recorded only three hits, a single by Paige Durkin and a single and home run by Lauren Leppo.
In game two, Corning took an early lead with two runs in the first inning and a run in the third. However, for the first time during the day, the Falcons took the lead in the fourth inning when they scored six runs. Even though Corning scored a run in the fifth, Lackawanna retained the lead through the top of the sixth inning and added two scores in that inning to extend the lead to 8-4. Unluckily, CCC scored seven in the bottom of the seventh to reclaim the lead at 11-8. Although Lackawanna scored a additional run in the seventh, they couldn't overcome the Corning lead. Pitching in relief, Kacey Orlowski suffered the loss after giving up eight runs, only three of which were earned, over the last three innings. The Falcons' bats awoke in the second game as five Lady Falcons had multi-hit games. Lauren Leppo singled and homered and drove in two runs in four at bats; Barbara Verrastro singled and homered with three RBIs in four plate appearances; Brenda Reninga also singled and homered while driving in two runs in four visits to the plate; Moriah Lynn had two singles and a double in four at bats; while Marina Pegula had two singles and an RBI in in three plate appearances.,
