Myrtle Beach, SC – The Lackawanna College softball team started their 2017 spring season with a doubleheader sweep of Grand Rapids Community College. The Falcons beat Grand Rapids 7-0 in the opener and shut out GRCC again in their second game of the day by an 11-0 score.
In the opener, Barbara Verrastro claimed her first win of the season by shutting out Grand Rapids over seven innings on five hits while striking out seven. Verrastro helped herself at the plate by going two for three with two runs scored and two runs driven in. Also having two hits was Brenda Reniga, who was two for two with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. The Falcons' other extra base hit was a triple contributed by Moriah Lynn.
In the second game, Kacey Orlowski earned her first collegiate win by holding Grand Rapids scoreless over seven innings on four hits, while striking out seven. At the plate, Sierra Mulgrew had a memorable day in her first college contest. Mulgrew had two doubles and two triples in five at bats. Other Lady Falcons having multi-hit games were Moriah Lynn with a single and triple in three at bats, her second triple of the day; Taylor Maloney with a single and double in two plate appearances; Brenda Reninga with singles in two four trips to the plate; and Kelly Snyder with two singles in two at bats. Emily Duffy in contributed three base hits in her five visits to plate. Lackawanna shortstop, Marina Pegula, got her first collegiate hit, a triple.
Tomorrow, the Falcons return to the diamond tomorrow to play USC Salk at 1:00 and PSU Fayettevile at 3:00. All games are played in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
