West Windsor, NJ – Monday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team ended their Region XIX Division II play with a doubleheader split with Mercer County Community College. In the opener, Mercer shutout the Falcons by a 3-0 score. In the night-cap, an RBI single by Emily Duffy and a run scoring double by Lauren Leppo broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh to lead the Falcons to a 5-2 victory.
With the split, Lackawanna ends conference play with a 7-3 win/loss record and guarantees the Falcons a second place seed in next weekend's Region XIX DII softball tournament. The game schedule for the tourney will be announced after the seeding is finalized by the Region's softball committee. The tournament will be hosted by County College of Morris at their Randolph, New Jersey Campus.
In today's opening game, Barb Verrastro suffered a disappointing loss when she relinquished three unearned runs, on three hits, while striking out nine. In the defeat, the Falcons were held to three hits, a single by Mikaela Browdy and Bethany Mickavicz; and a double by Taylor Tilberry.
In the night-cap, Katie Yale earned the win by holding Mercer to two runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits. It was Yale's twelfth win of the year.
At the plate, the Falcon hitters bounced back from their first game hitting slumps with eleven base hits. Six of those hits were contributed by Katie Yale, Emily Duffy and Lauren Leppo. Each of the trio had two hits apiece. Yale singled twice in three at bats; Duffy singled twice with a run scored and her seventh inning RBI in four plate appearances; and, Leppo singled and doubled in four trips to the plate.
Lackawanna concludes their regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader at Luzerne County Community College. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM
