Lackawanna claims EPAC Title with Doubleheader Sweep

Schnecksville, PA – Saturday afternoon, The Lackawanna College softball team took the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference softball title with a doubleheader sweep of Lehigh Carbon Community College. The Lady Falcons outscored Lehigh Carbon 13-2 in a five inning first game and 19-6 in another five inning contest in the nightcap.

In game one, Lackawanna scored seven runs in the fifth inning to put the Cougars away and give Katie Yale her eleventh victory of the season. She pitched all five innings, holding Lehigh Carbon to two runs on six hits. Yale now owns an 11-6 win/loss record for the 2016 season.

Top hitters for Lackawanna were Taylor Tilberry and Mikaela Browdy. Tilberry singled twice, doubled, scored twice and drove in five more runs in her three at bats.  Browdy singled three times, scored once and drove in two in four trips to the plate. Also contributing to the win with multi-hit games, were Jessica Bobersky, with a single and double in four plate appearances, and Emily Duffy, with two singles in two at bats.

With their ace on the mound, the Falcons quickly secured a victory in the second game, with a fifteen run outburst in the second inning. Barb Verrastro earned her thirteenth win of the season by hurling three innings, giving up three runs, one of which was earned, on three hits. Verrastro also contributed at the plate where in four at bats, she doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in a run. Kelly Snyder pitched the final two innings of the game, throwing two innings, while relinquishing three runs on three hits.

Lackawanna's batting star was Jessica Bobersky, who singled three times, tripled, scored four times and drove in five runs in five at bats. Also continuing their hot hitting from game one, were Taylor Tilberry and Mikaela Browdy. Tilberry singled twice and doubled in four trips to the plate, while scoring three runs and driving in three. Browdy singled and tripled twice in three trips to the plate, while scoring three and driving in two. Also having notable performances were Lauren Leppo, with two base hits in four plate appearances, and Emily Duffy, with a two run double in the Falcons' big fifteen run inning.

Lackawanna finishes their Region XIX Division II regular season on Monday with a doubleheader against Mercer County Community College at their West Windsor, New Jersey, campus. That two game set starts at 3:00 PM and will be extremely important in determining the seeding for the Region's softball tournament.
