Lady Falcons clinch Playoff Spot with Doubleheader Sweep

Pemberton, NY – Friday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team claimed a spot in the Region XIX Division II Softball Tournament, with a doubleheader sweep of Rowan College at Burlington County. The Lady Falcons outscored RCBC 9-2 in the opener and then shutout the Lady Barons in the nightcap, 7-0.

In Game one, Barb Verrastro earned the win after she held RCBC to two runs on six hits over seven innings. She struck out six. The victory was her twelfth of the season and her sixth consecutive win since her last loss on April 8th.  At the plate, the Falcons were led by Katie Yale, who had four singles, two runs scored and an rbi in five at bats. In addition to Yale, four other Falcons had multi-hit games. Emily Duffy singled and doubled twice in five trips to the plate; Mikaela Browdy had three singles in five plate appearances; Lauren Leppo singled and doubled in four at bats; while Kara Voyton singled twice in three at bats. Verrastro helped her own cause with an rbi double in the fifth which extended the Lackawanna lead to 5-2.

In game two, Katie Yale once again shined on the mound and at the plate. In the circle she shutout the Barons on four hits for seven innings. At the plate she singled twice and walked once in three official at bats. Yale scored three of the Falcons' seven runs. Also contributing to the Lackawanna's clinching win, were Kara Voyton, with a single, double, a run scored and two runs driven in in four at bats; and, Lauren Leppo, with a run scored and rbi on two base hits in three plate appearances.

Although Lackawanna is guaranteed a spot in the Region tourney, their seeding will not be determined until next Monday when their Region XIX schedule comes to a conclusion.

In the meantime the Falcons will travel to Schnecksville, Pennsylvania on Saturday to play Lehigh Carbon Community College in an Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference doubleheader. With a split in that twin-bill, the Lady Falcons will claim the EPAC softball championship. Saturday's two game set starts at 12:00 PM.
