Bethlehem, PA – Thursday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team remained unbeaten in the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference, with a doubleheader sweep of Northampton Community College. The Falcons took the first game by a 3-0 tally before outscoring Northampton 10-2 in the nightcap.
In game one, Barb Verrastro continued the outstanding pitching that earned her the EPAC Athlete of the Week for this past week. Verrastro held the Spartans scoreless over seven innings on three hits while striking out eight. The win was her eleventh of the season and gives her an 11-3 record for the season. At the plate, both Bethany Mickavicz and Verrastro made major contributions to the Falcon victory. In the second inning, Lackawanna scored their initial run on an RBI single by Verrastro. In the fourth, they scored their remaining two runs when Mickavicz plated a run with a single and Lauren Leppo scored on a Northampton error. Although the Lady Falcons put ten hits in the book, only one player had a multi-hit game. Jessie Bobersky had two singles in four at bats. Katie Yale, Taylor Tilberry and Leppo all had a double as their solo hit in the contest.
Katie Yale was the star of game two, Not only did she earn the win by holding Northampton to two runs on five hits over six innings, in a game shortened by the eight run rule; she also made a major contribution to the victory at the plate. In four plate appearances, Yale doubled twice, scored once and drove in two runs. Others having multi-hit games were Emily Duffy, who singled twice and doubled in four at bats; and, Mikaela Browdy, who singled twice in four trips to the plate.
Lackawanna plays again tomorrow, when they travel to Pemberton, New Jersey, to take on Rowan College at Burlington College in a very important Region XIX Division II doubleheader. Tomorrow's opening game starts at 3:00 PM.
