Lincroft, NJ – Friday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team fell twice to Brookdale Community College. The Falcons lost the first game of the non-conference doubleheader by a 3-1 score and then dropped the night-cap by a 12-4 tally. Brookdale entered the twin-bill as the fourth ranked team in the NJCAA DIII most recent poll.
In the opener, Lackawanna took a 1-0 in the top of the third, only to see Brookdale rebound with a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Barb Verrastro pitched a solid game in the defeat, Although she suffered the loss, she threw six innings, yielding only three runs on six hits, while striking out seven. The Lady Falcons top hitters were Lauren Leppo, who singled twice in three at bats; Jessica Bobersky, who singled and scored in three plate appearances; and, Kara Voyton, who singled and drove in the Falcons' only run in three trips to the plate.
In the second game, Brookdale scored seven runs through the fourth inning, to establish a lead which the Falcons could not overcome; even though they did rally for four in the seventh. Losing pitcher was Katie Yale, it was her fourth loss of the 2016 campaign against six victories. Lackawanna's top batter was Mikaela Browdy, who singled twice, scored a run and drove in two in her three at bats. Also notable was Jenai Plowden's two run double in her only plate appearance.
Weather permitting, Lackawanna will take the field again on Sunday when the host Raritan Valley Community College at St Anthony Field in Dunmore. Game time for game one of that two game set is 1:00 PM.
