Dunmore, PA – The Lackawanna College softball team split its Thursday afternoon doubleheader with Orange County Community College. Orange took the opener 8-7, holding off a Lackawanna rally in the seventh, when the Falcons scored a run and moved the winning run as far as second base when the last out of the contest was made. The Falcons won the night cap 4-2, relying on a Katie Yale pitching and hitting performance for the victory.
In the first game, Barb Verrastro suffered the loss, her second of the season. Despite yielding eight runs, her mound performance was more than respectable. Of the nine Orange scores, only three were earned, as Verrastro held the Colts to nine hits, while striking out seven. Lackawanna's top hitters were Mikaela Browdy, who singled, doubled and drove in two runs in four at bats; Taylor Tilberry, who also singled and doubled in four trips to the plate, while scoring twice and recording an RBI; and, Emily Duffy, who singled twice, scored a run and drove in a run in four plate appearances. Lauren Leppo had the only other extra base hit, a double in the fourth.
For the second straight day, Yale stole the show. She hurled seven innings giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits. At the plate she had half the Falcons hits with two singles in three at bats. Yale also scored once and drove in two runs. The other two Lackawanna hits were a Leppo's RBI double in the first and Jayci London's run scoring two base hit in the fourth.
On Saturday, Lackawanna travels to Pemberton, New Jersey to play Rowan College of Burlington College in their second conference double header of the season. Game time for the opening game is 1:00 PM.
