Myrtle Beach, SC – Monday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team swept its doubleheader against Rochester Community and Technical College, winning the opener 4-3 and taking the night-cap 11-6.
In the opener, the Falcons trailed until the bottom of the seventh. Rochester took the early lead when they scored three unearned runs in the third. In the fourth, Lackawanna responded with a run, when Emily Duffy scored on Kara Voyton's RBI Single. The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the seventh, when the Falcons loaded the bases. With two outs, Barb Verrastro doubled to right driving in two runs to tie the game at three all. Duffy followed with a walk off single to center to claim Lackawanna's come from behind victory.
Verrastro was credited with the win, hurling seven innings giving up three unearned runs on five hits while striking out eight. The win was her second of the 2016 season.
Lackawanna's leading hitter was Duffy, who singled twice in four at bats, scored once and drove in the winning run.
In the night-cap, Lackawanna scored five in both the first and third inning to coast to its 11-6 victory.
Winning pitcher was Katie Yale, who pitched a complete game relinquishing six runs, four of which were earned, on twelve hits. She also struck out four. Her win was her second without a loss.
Top hitters for Lackawanna were Lauren Leppo, who singled, doubled and homered in five at bats, and Yale, who singled twice in five plate appearances. Leppo's homer was the team's first of the season.
The Falcons play again tomorrow morning when they play Pitt Community College at 9:30 AM and Spartanburg Methodist College at 11:30.
