Vineland, NJ – Saturday afternoon, the Lackawanna College softball team opened their 2016 season with a doubleheader win over Cumberland County College. The Falcons took the opener by an 8-3 score and outscored Cumberland in the night cap, 9-1.
In the opener, the Falcons took the lead in the second, scoring one run on an RBI single by Lauren Leppo.
Lackawanna followed that initial score with a two-run rally in the fourth inning; a three run fifth and two more in the seventh. The three run fifth was highlighted by Kara Voyton's two run double and Mikaela Browdy's RBI single.
The Falcons' offensive star was Emily Duffy, who went 4-4 at the plate. Duffy doubled in the fifth inning and singled in the second, fourth, and seventh. Other notable performances included a two for four day by Leppo, which included a double and two runs batted in, and Browdy's two hit, three RBI game.
Barbara Verrastro recorded the win; allowing three runs on seven hits over seven innings, while striking out four. At the plate, Verrastro also contributed a double.
In the nightcap the Falcons beat Cumberland in five innings, after a five-run explosion in the fifth. That outburst was highlighted by Katie Yale's RBI single, a RBI double by Brittney Mecca and an RBI single by Jessica Bobersky

Lauren Leppo had the Falcons' best hitting performance with two singles and a double in her three at bats. Also having noteworthy performance was Mikaela Browdy, who reached base with two singles and a walk in her three plate appearances.
Yale got the win, allowing only one run on four hits in five innings.
The Lady Falcons play again on Monday, when they play Rochester Community and Technical College in a doubleheader at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. That twin–bill is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM.
